Originally released on vinyl in 1979 (if you look closely at the start of the video the date is clear.) Terry Wogan played it for several years around Christmas. The Cambridge Buskers had featured in a series of BBC1 Christmas continuity trails throughout December 1979. This and several other traditional tunes were heard quite regularly around then. The Buskers also performed this track on Pebble Mill at One.

In 1992 I videoed a wedding where this was played at the dance party in the evening. It was definitely this track by The Bells but without the annoying vocalising that can be heard on the version I found here on KZbin. The version played at the wedding sounded like it had a female doing the vocalising - and sounded much better at it too. Could that be the version you have? Would it still be possible for you to upload the A-side of your copy of Auld Lang Syne by The Bells to see if it's the same one I heard at that wedding all those years ago? Thanks.

I know, he's trying to emulate Van McCoy's The Shuffle here but it comes over as irritating.

I've still got the red vinyl 12" as in the video. I think it was released in 1977? I heard this played at my local pub in Leicester (Thomas Cook) at a disco there, absolutely blown away by the sound and vocals.

That "SCORE" during the narration, is simply stunning. Those strings, so thought inducing, real music, emotive and sublime. Not like the guff they produce these days. This is a masterpiece, truly beautiful. This one's for you Mum, and although I didn't understand the lyrics so much as a child, how loss truly breaks one, I understand now. I don't know where you are now Mum, on your next journey, a journey we will all one day embark on, but I hope you're at peace, with your lost loved one's and smiling down on me. And Mum, when my own time comes, I hope you're there, at those gates, waiting to vouch for me and show me the ropes in heaven. God speed ❤

I'm so glad I've finally found this track. It's bugged me for years, haven't heard it in over 25 years, but recall my Mum playing it when she was alive. Hauntingly beautiful ❤

I loved this theme when I first heard it...very haunting and sad, and it went so well with giving atmosphere to the sad death of Maureen in Crossroads. I remember Kenny Everett playing this version on his "Worst records" section of his show on Capital Radio back in the 1970's, and he described it as (quote) - "A tale of Unrequited drivel, by Paul Henry"! It may have been, but one or two (including me) liked this tune, as sad as it was! Thanks for putting this onto KZbin. I never thought I'd ever come across this tune again...so glad I did!

So true darling, my Mum played this on a record player when I was a child, I've always been very musical and play piano myself now and I like to write a bit too. I recall, somewhat vividly my own emotional response to the strings in this piece, I cried, felt deeply emotional, and I was maybe 10 at the time, but I knew it was sublime and beautiful. I was transfixed, and listened again and again, with my Mum asking me why it upset me as I'd never seen Crossroads, but I just said, Mummy, the music, it's beautiful, it makes me want to cry. I think she was shocked how music made me feel at such an early and tender age, I never lost that ability, to connect and take in the emotional aspect of music, it unites us all, we all understand music, even a piece without vocals. It's our universal language, the median of music is such a beautiful thing. When I leave this earth, I will truly miss music, it gets us through unhappy times, happy times, and turbulence in life. If you're reading this and you're going through a hard time, it will get better, you're never alone, and you are loved. ❤❤❤
