Question? Have you put all of your items into you pack, loaded up and thrown it on your back and walked a couple miles. We all learn from experience, and we all tend to learn that we don't need nearly as much as we think we do. Weight, weight, weight, every ounce counts. Ditch the bear canister, I predict by the end of your first day backpacking you will be begging for a bear to come along and give a quick mercy killing. If you have a headlamp you dont need a flashlight, by the time you get to camp you will be ready for sleep. Pick one, air mattress or sleep pad. You should weigh your pack and gear. My first trip i was at 32 lbs. My most recent trip I got down to 26 lbs and I still would like to go lower. Every ounce counts... if you want to bring a fire starter bring 3 pieces not the whole bag. I noticed you didn't show any food or water. I seen your water filter, but have you practised filtering water and have the process down pat. A liter of water weighs 2 lbs, most hikers carry 2 liters as a minimum. Not trying to scare you off backpacking but it is very challenging and difficult, but immensely rewarding. Every ounce counts... Backpacking in itself is incredibly challenging, filming your trips is another level of crazy. There is a reason why so few are able to do it. Holding a camera steady in the woods is hard enough, dong it with a 35 lb pack on your back....

Yeah her setup looks to have a bunch of stuff that is doubled up, unnecessary or way too heavy, especially for her.

Definitely a learning curve, an experienced hiker can save you a lot of the learning curve. I train for a month or so before a long trip for cardio and core strength. Your feet need callous or they will blister. Based on your size and body weight will determine how many lbs you should be carrying. I have two packs one for 30lb max weight and the second one can carry 40lbs, usually for colder weather.

I appreciate these tips and words of warning. I know I will need to adjust some things, I have packed everything in my pack but not fully with food and water. I will take your advice and do a trail with it on in Frances Slocum, there is a 5mile trail that has a variety of terrain and I can get a good feel for the weight and feel of my gear.

@@darcyshikingdiaries I met a young hiker at the Rausch gap shelter from Idaho , gave the best advice I needed. Buy what gear that works for you , gear that you like. You don't have to buy what others use. He was hiking in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, he said hike in style, have fun its not race, enjoy the hike. There many interesting people you will meet along the way, most want to share. It makes it all the more fun. Looking forward to your hiking videos ....

It's always exciting to see another hiker make the transition to backpacking. You can't go wrong with the Osprey my Exos has kept me going after my back injury they make a great product from my experience. The Pinchot and sections of the Loyalsock are where my wife and I did the bulk of our gear testing. Being able to hike in just a little and camp knowing you can bale if something doesn't work out is nice when your just starting.

"The money trap is good to avoid as you go on more trips you will most likely find yourself beginning to look for alternatives to some of your gear." That is nonsense... so you just said that she is avoiding the money trap but will look for alternatives. So she is going to be wasting money. She went heavy and if she doesn't correct that quick then she won't just be looking for alternatives once or twice she will spend and spend again on stuff because she keeps trying to cheap out.
@DragonRoams

@@thomgizziz not what I meant. I was thinking more of the natural progression of how our preferences change as we grow in a new hobby. I did much of what she did and still use much of that same stuff as when I started. But most backpackers I know do change some items out early on for different reasons. It was not intended to imply she would just be swapping everything out. Sorry that came across in a different way I edited my comment to avoid any other misunderstanding.

Looks like you picked some good gear, your pack weight with food and water should be about 35lbs, a kitchen scale will help. Buy a rain cover for the pack and nylon sili bags to keep stuff in the pack dry, especially your sleeping bag and some dry clothing. When your gear gets wet water can add 10 lbs or more to your carry weight. Then tent can be strapped to the top of the pack or the straps on the outside bottom. A 15 degree down quilt is the way to go , when its warm you can sleep on top or let your feet stick out for temp regulation. Everyone has different gear the the basics seem to be the same. Power banks 20,000ma can do a lot of camera batteries and the phone a few times. All trails is great app also. Hopefully this will help some , happy back packing.

@@darcyshikingdiaries Permethrin is probably the best tick spray out there for gear and clothing, you want to spray all your clothing shoes and socks to. Your tent , sleeping back in case one gets inside your sleeping bag . You can change out your gear according to the time of year and the weather . If its really hot I have three liters of water or more. 😁😁

35 lbs... with how small she is? She didn't get great backpacking stuff and is doubling up on things that probably aren't necessary. If she is strapping a tent to the outside where is she going to put the bear can? She is screwed with the gear she got and needing to take a camera. I hope she isn't actually hiking more than a couple of miles or she is going to have a bad time.
