I'm a long time user of $olidworks (at work - but I'm moving on now). I like FreeCAD and 0.21 is quite reasonable. I think v1 and the TNP fix is going to be pretty good (seen a couple of 'preview' videos). You certainly can't beat the price (and that it works on Linux and Mac). There are still a couple of things that $olidworks makes a simple but are a harder in FreeCAD. I like the idea of modifying the colours to match what I am used to, and what would be even better is providing a customisation file as a link - save me having to go through and do it all myself! Cheers!

When attempting to do the helical cut, I continuously am getting a " wire not closed" error. I've went over all the constraints & it all looks good but still getting the same error. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

have the same error, not sure what i did wrong. edit: solved it by removing everything from the sketch except for the rectangle and constraining that at neccesary distance from the center of plane

I followed along, and I have a computer that is overkill for most operations. That said, this sucker still took about 2.5 to 3 minutes to calculate! Really nice trick though! :)

Nice tutorial. I tried to follow it for another knob. But when i'm trying to make the second helix for the knurls, i get a error, face must be planar. Trying to learn how to use cad by mixing videos and testing for myself. You got any idea what could be my problem?

It's the number of times the knurl cut fits into the circumference of the circle so (diameter*pi)/knurl size = number of times it fits

This is actually pretty good tutorial for many electronic enclosures that have common features such as ports, some mounting lugs, possibly snap-on edges. I covers almost everything except how to easily create sketch for all ports on one side that are subtracted from both base and a lid, which is not needed here. And maybe some info about mechanical tolerances, I've already seen parts that have like 1/8 on both sides and to my surprise it works on ~5x8cm raspberry pi box.

You could make a double hub gear without the need to use supports. Print the hub gear as you did, then print a washer or spacer the size that the hub would be. You can either glue the hub to the flat side or just place it on the shaft as a spacer.

Hey if anyone's software isn't allowing them to hit post-processing you may need to go to Edit (At the topmost left) -> Preferences (At the bottom of the pop up) -> Unit System -> Metric Small Parts and Cnc. If you had made a job before doing this I believe that you need to delete it and make a new one. I hope that this helps!

@forgeflarion8362
@forgeflarion8362 3 ай бұрын
An stl is an object's save file, but a gcode is the instructions for a machine to make an object. In short a program like FreeCAD or Blender want STLs but machines like 3D printers or CNC machines need gCodes. I hope that this helps

One tip: you can calculate the number of polar revolutions in the expression editor by referencing the knob radius, pi and the knurl-thing size.

would that be: 2 x r x π and then whatever comes out of that divided by the length of the knurl-square?

Just learning this WB. Thanks though. Please revisit, Version 21.2 no where's near this tutorial, Fanuc specifically and other post processors are broken. I have cam background, not impressed with surface machining versatility. Will stick with my 1996 package on old P2 and P3 towers with Win98 SE, I machine molds with it so, imagine a CNC router....

So now I see this after printing some dust caps for some solar filters. It would have been nice to have actual knurls. I used PrusaSlicer fuzzy skin to create a grip on the external surface.

I really like your style and the practical models! I am learning a lot. Two things (and I get that this is a year late) that might make it a bit easier to follow - if you could refer to the planes by the name in FreeCad "XY, XZ, YZ" rather than 'top plane' that would help. Also - and you probably won't like this - when you switched the color scheme to match a different CAD program (SolidWorks?) that really threw me. If you are going to have a FreeCAD tutorial it might be best to stick with the FreeCAD defaults as much as possible. If find it harder to follow your sketching after you started using a different colour scheme. Not showstoppers - just minor suggestions.

I have a similar problem as the number of faces increase. I made a plaque and it ended up around 1600 faces and everything I did after I padded the text just ran slower and slower, and I gotta say, from a design POV, knurling creates a multitude of faces.

Maybe it's a good idea to point out that in Freecad, speeds are in mm/s and in general in CNC speeds are in mm/min. Probably that's why you went that fast on the bench. 30mm/s = 1800mm/min So probably your machine went it's maximum speed.

question; Is how to create gears in freecad Path Workbench for cnc, I can create and 3D print gears to make sure I have the have right gear reduction and torque. I want to then cnc cut the gears out of foam for casting into aluminum using lost foam casting technique. Problem is to create Gcode files in Path workbench. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I watched your video for 22 seconds! You must be smarter than ANY college professors I have ever learned under!!! NOT ONE of those professors played music in the background, WHY? Maybe they did not want any of us to get distracted!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you smarter than ANY college professors or do you just like to DISTRACT us?? If you take the music out of the background and re-post it I might watch.

As you can not add material with a CNC milling machine, the area around your text needs to be removed and thus becomes your pocket.

12:45 - FYI, you can't apply a chamfer or fillet that goes the full depth of a recess. If you measure the depth of the V groove (say with a named reference constraint) and use it for the depth, then it will error out. However, subtract anything (say 0.001mm) and it will work. I'm not sure if this is the problem you were having, I haven't ever tried to do a chamfer on a feature carved into rounded surface, but it's a common problem. Anyway, I appreciate this video. It's fast paced and full of good ideas. Thanks.
