It's that "wooden tub" kick drum sound that I have the biggest problems with - because it sounds so shite- especially in the way that it colours everything else in the low-mid region

My preference is always to EQ kicks as a smile, keeping highs and bass, doesn’t work in every style though. Occasionally you need a bit of body in the mids.

I think Alfonso has a good point here. Just be aware that your kick needs leave as much space as the rest of your track needs. If you’re intending to have a big bassline and lots of midrange elements then you need a shorter kick. If you want a track where the kick is dominant then you just don’t need as much bass in other elements (maybe even none). But if you try to make every sound big then everything will just sound messy and blown out.

The DJM 900 and Xone 92 are expensive because they are industry standards that have to be workhorses. The DJM450 and DJM750 are pretty cheap actually. The problem with mixers is that people are willing to pay too much for things they don't need.
