I was blessed years ago to see Johnny play at the Tail of the Cock Restaurant & Bar in Burbank, California. There were a great many studio musicians in the room playing homage to the man's greatness. Rest in peace, Johnny. You were one of a kind.

This is super fantastic!! It really is horrendous when piano players keep doing it as the exact sheet music, and those awful horrendous repeats which bore you to heck and back

@Leander-piano You did a good job. It's going to take time to get as good a feel for music as such pianists but I'm sure you'll get there. You need to really learn to put all your heart into it and that will help a lot

Had the great pleasure of listening to Johnny for 3 hours, at Hanratty's c.1983. Had him almost all to myself. One of the most transcendent experiences of my life of my. I would rank Johnny among the greats of stride piano: James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, and Don Ewell.

WTF - there was nothing wrong with the regular time signature. And were you trying to prove you can play fast? There is nothing good about that performance other than it being differently mangled for a bad joke.

David, after listening to some of your recent KZbin videos/recordings, I was moved to pull out my copy of your album "Through the Bottomlands." I purchased it at the Scott Joplin Festival back in the 80's and had a chance to discuss it with you in person. It's such a wonderful recording. I wanted desperately to listen to "The Early Life of Larry Hoffer." Unfortunately, it's not available on KZbin and I can't find any other recorded version of it. So, that's when I pulled out the album. You know, I think it's time for someone to record your collected works. Is most of it available as sheet music? Regardless, thank you for posting recordings of your many different compositions. I'm happy that your music entered my life. P.S. Is there any way to know where you will be performing? Do you still perform at festivals?

It loses itself played that fast. The rhythms and synchronizations aren't there. I don't like it. But--it takes a heck of a pianist to be able to lay it that fast.
