Yeah, I might be part of the cult. It's pretty hilarious, the absurd situations and dialog. This is the Joe Pesci character I will always remember him for - Serious, yet can't be taken seriously.

How did the Dahlbergs have horses when the other animals are dead? Wouldn’t Steven Klein show radiation sickness the same time as Denise? I think this is a powerful film, but I thought these were a couple plot holes. Just my opinion
@SECRETARIATguy224
@SECRETARIATguy224 3 күн бұрын
If the horses were in a barn they could've been sheltered from the worst of the fallout, and as far as the radiation is concerned, remember that Denise is a much smaller female, while Steven Klein is a much larger and athletic male. The radiation sickness gets both of them; it just works faster on the lady. By the end of the film, neither of them have long to live.

With such a perfect script, and something for everyone in this film, the timing of running up against the buzzsaw of the Godfather was unfortunate. I still rever it as a culturally more relevant film with accrued time, than the Godfather. The Mob had a shelf life, when the RICO Act was implemented. Politicians still Politicing to this day. Thanks Mike!

Great review. One small nitpick: the book Paul lets Annie read (the one in the leather satchel) isn’t the last Misery book. It’s the first book Paul wrote that isn’t in the Misery series. There’s a scene where Annie buys the last Misery book at a store. You see her tell Paul she just bought it & is about to read it. Paul’s very nervous, wondering how Annie will react when she finds out he killed off her beloved Misery character.

The DOD refused to help the film, but in no way could they prevent the film from using stock mushroom footage. Much of the launch sequence is from the DOD directed movie "First Strike".

False. There isn't a single shot of a mushroom cloud that isn't special effects. The DoD refused to allow them access to anything under their authority because Nicholas Meyer refused to depict the USSR as firing first. All of the footage shown in the film was stock footage under public domain.
@silikon2
@silikon2 3 күн бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 You said false but agreed 99.9% with what I wrote… I didn’t say any of the mushroom clouds came from stock footage. I did mean *public domain* stock footage, but I assumed that was the implication of me mentioning First Strike. If there was public domain mushroom cloud footage that the filmmakers had access to, the DoD couldn’t stop them using it any more than they could stop them using First Strike. It’s funny, I saw this at the time and it was glaringly obvious they were using stock footage in various places, because I had seen much of it before and because the film quality was so jarring different than the freshly filmed footage. But all these years later, it’s nowhere near as jarring because it’s been so long since I’ve seen the stock footage and because even the then freshly filmed footage now looks incredibly dated.

@@silikon2 No I'm not. You used the term stock mushroom footage. At that time there wasn't any stock mushroom footage. All footage of actual nuclear explosions [mushroom clouds] was either classified or under authority of the DoD. The DoD refused to allow the mushroom cloud footage in the film.

Gen Xer here. I was about 10 when this came out. It was extremely popular and hyped to the max. My parents didn't take me to see it until August and there were still lines around the theatres to get in. People were wearing buttons (so popular in the 80s) that said "I saw E.T.". While I finally saw E.T. and I wasn't completely disappointed but it wasn't what I had expected. I was expecting something along the lines of Star Wars (you can see by my thumbnail I am a real fanatic) or Raiders of the Lost Ark with a lot of action. Ironically, I enjoy it much more as an adult than I did as a kid. I think I understand its purpose more....meaning tolerance and care for all beings. 8/10

To me, the old lady stoaway was the best character! She didn't win the award bc she was old. Yes this movie rocks! I can see why it was such a hit. This is tied with The Poseiden Adventure for the best of the disaster flicks so popular in the 70s. This probably gets more points for being the 1st but P.A. had the more intense action sequences. The sequels to Airport were good but something about this one was charming and one of a kind.

In the early 70's I was really into motorcycles (still am). I was drawn to this film mainly because of the title and subject matter. I remember seeing this at the local drive-in when it was released. I own a DVD copy of this, along with the LP from the same film. The album came with a very large poster of that iconic shot of Monument Valley with Blake and his police bike in the foreground. I'm surprised you didn't touch on any comparison to John Ford's work. Seems like James Guercio may have been at least somewhat influenced by the cinemaphotography from earlier films like 'The Searchers' and 'Sgt. Rutledge'
