There is absolutely NO NEED to make the tool like the dude in this video. You WILL weaken the 7/16-20 bolt and risk it snapping off in the impeller! You simply need a 5/16-in dia. x 2.625-in hardened steel rod AND a grade-8 7/16-20 x 2.5-in full-thread bolt! 1) Spritz the hole with a generous amount of your preferred thread penetrant. 2) Slip the 5/16-in dia. rod into the impeller mounting hole. 3) Hand thread the 7/16-20 x 2.5-in bolt into the impeller hole. 4) Tighten the 7/16 bolt with a 1/2-drive ratchet--Do NOT use and impact wrench!--until the impeller assembly is free from the motor shaft. Cheap and Easy!

Can you explain how you attached the spikes and nails into the base? The video doesnt show this very clearly.
@bearlyhomesteadingАй бұрын
We drilled pilot holes in the base for the spikes so they didn't split the boards of the base. We got spikes that already had holes, so it was just a matter of finding the hole that best aligned perpendicular to the side board of the base and pound in the nails.

@bearly homestead How well has this shelter held up the last three years?
@bearlyhomesteadingАй бұрын
So, we sold the property (Colorado) where we erected that shelter to buy our new property (Washington). I actually had the chance to drive by the old property this week as I was out in Colorado for a business trip. The new owners had reconfigured the pastures for horses and taken down the shelter. I know that it was up and still completely intact last year, so it went through 2 full winters with no issues.

That 2nd attempt was oh so close. Had you simply used an inner, and outer strip separated by spacers every few inches, perhaps 12", you'd have licked your problem with less material and a much lighter structure. Still, thank you for sharing your experience.

what about rain or thunder storm safety....???
@bearlyhomesteading2 ай бұрын
The tarp sheds water, so rain isn't a problem. We don't get a lot of thunder storms so lightning has not been an issue for us. Wind could be a problem. Make sure to build the opening so does not face the prevailing wind direction and have an opening in the back to let the wind through. We built this three years ago and it is still up the last time I passed by the old homestead.

How do you keep the cats away from voles that ate the pouson?

We just put the poison well inside the garden and collapsed as many tunnels as we could find. Essentially we were trying to trap the voles inside the garden with the poison.

@@bearlyhomesteading thank you for replying. We live on a half acre. It's our first spring here. Vole holes everywhere! We resorted to the poison. There are far too many holes to plug. We found a few dead in the grass.

Soaking the boards (especially in hot water) makes them much easier to bend, but a better method is to use multiple thinner boars that easily bend and then you just add several layers.

Also, those plastic panels will last a lot longer if you paint the wood behind them white. Darker backdrops tend to cause it to become brittle and chip apart.

There are many good places to get seeds but when we lived in Colorado and needed short season seeds I started using Veseys and Seed Trust. They were both recommended by locals who were using them with success. I still use them here in Washington.

That's a really nice addition...the corrugated panels! I would say you need some ventilation except in the very cold months, but maybe in your climate you don't?
@bearlyhomesteading7 ай бұрын
We really did not need much ventilation. During the heat of the summer we would prop open both doors with a scrap piece of 2x4 during the heat of the day and that was enough. We didn't even need air conditioning in the house up there.

Hello, I’d like to build a greenhouse using the poly panels and would like to know if you are in Colorado? Will it hold up to a snow load and panels shed snow?
@bearlyhomesteading10 ай бұрын
We were in Colorado when we built this greenhouse. The cattle panels that we used were very sturdy and had a lot of support, so they would carry a sizeable snow load. The panels do not shed snow very well, since the ridges of the poly panels are going in a horizontal direction and not a vertical. We made one side of the house lower than the other so it sheds water pretty well, but not snow. Using the back side of a garden rake worked well to knock the snow off without damaging the poly panels.

I have concrete slab on grade. I also have engineered hardwood floors. I keep getting mix installation recommendations. One installer says just use Prego underlay to keep moisture out, and glue the tongue and grooves, while the other ones are saying, you need to grind out the old glue from the carpet from the concrete, and glue down - as it will not be optimal for concrete install. It's a mess, I'm not sure which way to go because each have a different pricing. Any advice from professionals would be greatly appreciated
@bearlyhomesteading11 ай бұрын
I have never done a glue down installation, only nail down and floating. I have avoided the glue down specifically because I didn't want the mess. The two floors that I have done on slab were both floating and have not had any issues.

Thanks for the video. I was thinking of pulling my 10HP off of my chipper and installing on a roto-tiller. However, the shaft doesn't have a keyway in it so pretty sure it won't work on the tiller. Thanks to your video I saw how to remove the blade assembly. However rather than drilling the bolt I just cut a piece of 5/16 hot roll round 2 5/8 long and put it in the shaft before the bolt, it worked fine with no damage to the threads.

I tried the same, but with a length of door hinge pin. Problem is it was too soft, and it buckled/mushroomed as well. Going to try and extract it tomorrow. Will use a harder piece of rod if I can get it out.
@mcafone Жыл бұрын
On tough to remove shaft pulleys or other shaft mounted devices, I find it easiest to drill a small countersink in the head of the extractor bolt and use an air hammer with a conical point on the end to vibrate the crap out of it while using a prying device to "walk" the pully off the shaft. The vibration tends to break up any rust between the shaft and pully. Works great on small engine flywheels too.

I made a two piece removal tool. For the inner piece I cut off the head of a 2 1/2" x 7/16" bolt and ground the threads off so it would fit in the 1 5/8" deep hole in the engine shaft and bottom out. I dropped this "pusher piece" thru the impeller and down into the shaft hole. Then I screwed a 7/16" fine thread bolt thru the impeller until it touched the pusher piece and torqued it until it pushed the impeller off. When I pointed the engine shaft down the inner pusher piece came back out of the engine shaft. In essence I made a two piece version of the factory tool using (2) 7/16" bolts that I already had on hand. Cost: nothing. If you can find a 7/16" x 4" (min) fine thread bolt that has threads the full length, just grind off 1 3/4" of the threads on the end and you will have the factory tool for the cost of one bolt.
@timault82099 күн бұрын
Sourcing 7/16-20 full-thread fasteners, regardless of length, is very challenging. I re-tapped the impeller hole to the much more common (and robust) thread size of 1/2-13.

Am getting ready to build this but am wondering how you attached plastic to frame and how did you drill into plastic /meaning was it easy or did it crack the plastic at all?
@bearlyhomesteading Жыл бұрын
No, the plastic did not crack and I did two things to help with that. First, I attached the plastic sheets on a warm day so the material was less brittle. Second, I drilled pilot holes through the plastic first then followed it with the screws.

Using your calipers, measure the extraction bolt and the threads it goes into, then measure the length of your rod, which should be a hardened shaft just .010" smaller than the hole it will go into. The hardened shaft won't bend out and cause a problem, No need to drill out the bolt. I can make them.
