My God...forget all the note choices and voicings and all that stuff people break down to try and understand this man. Just his speed and accuracy are wonders to behold. I have no interest in this fusion/jazz type of music. I am a 80's metal guy who loves the instrument. Some of my heroes in the metal scene are guys like Malmsteen, Vai, Satch, Eddie, etc. and I don't think any of them have that level of dexterity and clean style like Alan. This dude can do a 10 note run faster and cleaner than most can do a 5 note run. And then you add his eccentric taste into that mix...

Actually they did complain before, there were like 2 remasters of the album which had "blep" noises on every curse word to censor it, which made the song useless for listening. They also altered the setlist order so "These Boots" was the last one, since everyone was going to just skip it.

The thing I love about Allan is to look at him,he doesn't look anything like someone who'd do what he does,he looks more like a relief high school physics teacher than this blazing guitar shredder virtuoso.

Tell me any guitarist that could improvise like this let alone play what Allan does at 2:28.
@MetalheadNation19 күн бұрын
Absolutely. That is such an insanely creative lick. I find it to be an incredible example of Allan’s alien ability to use both his incredibly unique rhythmic and harmonic approaches. Nobody else in the world would approach a “lick” like that while composing, much less while improvising. An indisputable musical genius. I think the thing I admire most about Allan’s playing is his fearlessness and absolute boundary-expanding mindset towards music. It feels like at any moment, with any lapse in improvisational intuition or technique, the whole thing could fall off the tracks, but Allan always perfectly controls that chaos and never falters. Always taking a risk with every line he improvises, but he always connects it perfectly and creates something both chaotic and cohesive. And he was always improving. Though there were some physical limitations he likely faced towards the end, he was still getting better. Though I imagine it wasn’t enjoyable for him, his attitude of never being able to just settle on “good enough” pushed him to heights I’d argue that no other guitarist has reached. In my opinion, he’s the best of all time, and his passing has left a gap in the music world that will likely never be filled again.

I just wish that the yoshi's performance got more exposure. There seems to be hundreds of "reaction videos" on the same Holdsworth performance from 1997, which was a good to a point but his playing here really was on another level. I think around this time (2006) Allan was in his happiest stage (a relative term with Holdsworth)...this band was really great for him creatively. Unfortunately ill health followed not too long after and by 2012 he was declining. Its such a pity that so little of his later work was finished/released as it feels like he left us 15 years before he actually did. We're so lucky that this Yoshi's show was recorded as it's the best live version of the master at work.

Seeing him play a new prs compared to his beat up Tele made me do a double take.
@davebowman6497 Жыл бұрын
Are you saying it's a PRS he's playing in this video? The logo on the headstock sure looks like "Fender" rather than "PRS" to me. On the other hand thecrest og the guitar looks like no Fender I've seen. I also went through Wikipedias listing of Fender guitars, including discontinued ones, and came out empty. It sure looks nice, though. And Robben ofcourse get a wonderful sound out of it (and his amp). But what is it?!?

@@davebowman6497 I guess it's not a prs but that misses the point

Oh, I wasn't arguing against your double take. And I wasn't looking for an _argument_ on the guitar make. I am just genuinely curious as to what guitar that Robben is playing here.

@@davebowman6497 In this video he’s playing a Fender Esprit aka Robben Ford Signature. Made by Fender from the late 1980s thru early 2000s. He played an Esprit/RF Sig on Talk to Your Daughter and some of the Blue Line albums (and in live performances of the era) then moved on to other guitars around 1992ish. He reunited with one here in the early 2k’s. For some fans, Robben’s guitar tones when he was playing an Esprit/RF Signature through his Dumble amp are favorites.

Robins failing here is not to have a talented kid in the band, at least one. Miles Davis taught him that and gave him an opportunity more over it reaches out and prevents a gig filled with middle aged fat men.
