Certainly one of the most brilliant compositions ever written for bass! Absolutely genius.

His ability to change tunings is incredible as well. He isnt just using his hipshots, he is changing tunings manually too.

I love the emotion & journey that Mr. Manring provides with his bass. A true innovator that made the bass a solo instrument but also added a new signature sound to any band / project he works with. 'Thonk' was mind-blowing for its time and his "structured improv" trio, Attention Deficit, was dynamically experimental & awesome. I was lucky to get to see him play 'Equilibre' with David Cullen &(surprise drummer) Mark Walker (who added an awesome layer). If you live in California and don't make an effort to see him, you're missing out big time...

One year I was at the Namm show and was at the Zon booth. On the wall was a HyperBass. In my excitement I picked it up and started to play it and analyze all its components. Someone in front of me was looking at me as if had done something wrong. I looked and to my shocking surprise right behind me was Michael Manring. He was about to do a solo set. I apologized not realizing it was his actual bass. Michael was so incredibly kind. He said "no its ok go on and play it" What a true gentleman!! I will never forget that moment and the performance that followed. 😇

@@swettyspaghtti Oh ya I went down the Micheal Hegdes rabbit hole after discovering Manning. The youtube algorithm is amazing sometimes when I get suggestions like that. Hedges is pure ear candy. If you like that fingerstyle guitar you should check out Andy McKee....try a song of his called drifting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epXRZYB9lrhmhJY

Michael was a huge name back in the '90s. He appeared on the cover of Bass Player magazine and his talent was highly appreciated. Thonk was an amazing album and still is. It's been on Spotify for a few years now after a long wait. Michael was one of Charles Berthoud's teachers and mentors.
