So-Called "Vivien Leigh" wasn't even her real name. She was born Vivian Mary Hartley . She obviously sold-out her birth name to the greedy & deceitful 'Hollywood' and anticipation of greater recognition & money. It also implies parental & heritage disrespect.
@vivwilson40013 ай бұрын
Vivien Leigh was a perfect specimen of womanhood to the world but having read a detailed book about her life recently, it is clear that happiness was elusive for much of her all-too-short time on earth. An interesting connection can be made between Alive Studios of Teignmouth, Devon and the world famous actress. When Vivien was at boarding school in Surrey she became friends with a girl who lived in this lovely coastal resort.She came down to visit on occasions and it was here that Vivien met her first husband, a Barrister, Leigh Holman, whose family lived at the top of Breakneck Hill, Teignmouth. They married in the early 1930s and had a daughter. Life moved on swiftly and Laurence Olivier became the great love of her life. Even that marriage failed but she stayed friends with both of them until her tragically early death aged 54 of tuberculosis in 1967

Thank you, Viv, for connecting the dots between Vivien Leigh and Teignmouth. It’s fascinating how our lovely seaside town has attracted an eclectic crowd over the years. From literary icons like Jane Austen and John Keats in the early 1800s to rock legends Muse, and the dashing Colin Firth who graced our town during the filming of the 2018 movie The Mercy. I wonder how many other stars have graced our promenade? #Teignmouth #VivienLeigh #ColinFirth #16mmfilm #VintageFilm #16mmfilm #FilmPreservation

A wonderful historical document from a pivotal point in time. No doubt it must have been a very memorable trip for these schoolboys. The film reminds me of Adam Curtis' recent BBC documentary TraumaZone which also contains many scenes of mundane life in the last days of the USSR. Thanks for making it public!

I was a month shy of my seventh birthday when on Sunday 24th January 1965 Churchill’s death was announced on the radio. My mother dispatched me downstairs from our first floor flat to tell my father who was doing something to the car. He doffed his old army beret and practically slow marched inside. I watched his funeral at school on the television. It was of course black and white.

I am patriotic to Britain, though cannot help betrayed by Churchill's legacy. Hitler did not want war with Britain but WC made it his business for war, putting the patriotism aside for a moment. We were left with a 47 year Cold War against Hitler's original foes, the whole of eastern Europe lost it's democracy inc Poland we went to save & an eye-watering debt to the USA till 86 while the UK public were left in a post-empire & austerity. Post-war generation picking up the pieces where nationalism is out, liberalism in it's place we are the nation that has been pasturalised, not Germany.

I was a teenager when I went with my parents to London for his funeral, you could hear a pin drop when the cortege passed. RIP to the greatest Briton who ever lived.
@user-gc8pc3ol6l4 ай бұрын
Plenty of greater Britons than him. People like Reginald Mitchell who designed the Spitfire, Hugh Dowding who constructed modern air defence and told Winston where to go when he wanted to squander the RAF in the hopeless battle for France. Plenty of greater architects, sculptors, poets, painters, scientists and philosophers. All unique. He's just another politician. Above average as a canny politician but with plenty of flaws like most of them.
@johnallen78074 ай бұрын
I appreciate you're not British but had he not been our PM in 1940 it is likely you would be posting in German not English.@@user-gc8pc3ol6l

@@johnallen7807 I am British actually. Churchill was far from the leader he is often painted to be. But his numerous flaws are glossed over. Luckily the military often ignored his ideas and plans. There are plenty of greater Britons ion that regard who have made far more of an impact globally. Churchill may have been the figurehead of the regime during WW2 but the credit for success goes to those engineers, strategists and the rank and file of the armed forces.
@johnallen78074 ай бұрын
That is certainly not a British name and your use of English in using "regime" to describe the National Government of 1940-45 is not correct. You sound like the kind of left wing nutter who is determined to undermine or devalue the achievments of my country and its people,@@user-gc8pc3ol6l
