If you’re still trying to date the saw look at the kill switch. Black levers makes it a early model if it’s Red that would make it a much later model The red lever is also more desirable saw with its better power to weight ratio it’s got a different better design muffler a better crank shaft and it’s made exclusively in Germany. A true Red lever slant is argumentatively the best power saw ever made.Or as buckin billy ray would say “A gentleman’s saw” lol

How did you clean your 1926 Parker Duofold "Senior"? I have one I found at my grandparents' home and the barrel has some ink stains. I would like to clean it and see if it still works. Do you have any recommendations?

I have a 20” sthil light 04 bar and a 18” bar and I found the 20” bar the cuts were slower than a 18” bar so is that normal for a longer bar to be cutting slower than a shorter bar ?

I bought this updated filter kit for 500i when it came out together with the muffler, only issue I have is that the o ring pinched and did never seat properly from new, I think with a fair bit of mucking around I had got it to seat once but when I checked again today to do some maintenance I noticed it was broken and all screwed up and folded over. When you twist down the latch you can't see the o ring, so you never know if it's seated right. Looking at it reasonably it's just a patch up idea that never worked to seal the latch from being a dust entry to filter core, it's a joke really for what is otherwise a nice product but pricey especially with exchange rates and prohibitive shipping costs to Australia. I'm not sure if they updated it since but that would be my sincere recommendation.

After running and purposefully semi abusing my 400 and finding out how good it is I’m getting another. The west coast clutch cover, dogs and bark box made a drastic difference, to the better. I used to be concerned about the lack of chain oiling with a 25” bar but it’s fine but I do run nothing but Harvest King bar oil. Harvest King is thinner. 👍

Max flow is great for its prolonged maintenance interval for people that don't bother cleaning their stock filters , but like all foam filters, even oiled, it will allow substantially more fines inside the engine than paper filters. Dust being so fine is also the reason why you don't see it in the throat of the intake, since its easily washed inside the engine by carb spit-back. Positives and negatives, in the end every person decides. For a crew of knucklehead workers I'd run max flows 100%, and clean/reoil them 1-2 times a weak. For my own saws, I'm running the stock filters and cleaning them 2-3 times a day. Doesn't take much to tap them out. A sharp chain keeps the fines away from clogging them anyway.

I don't buy Stihl saws anymore so I no longer have to worry.

Did you take your carb apart? Ethanol hardens the diaphragms, & nothing flows. If this is the case, your fuel pressure is essentially 0.

I prefer the 440, hate the flip caps but the tanks are much more rigid and won’t break at the end of the pistol grip like the 044. I have 2 440’s, one is 44/46 hybrid and the other is 50mm slantfin both very aggressively ported. These are most definitely my favorite saws. I had a 372 ported by the same same guy, same bar and chain and it couldn’t come close to cutting to the 440, this story makes a lot of husky people mad but this was my honest experience.

You should run a West Coast Saw barkbox on there, it does the same thing, but directs the exhaust a bit higher, so you're not hitting the side of the crankcase so much.

Have you noticed excess play in the chassis after adding the 3/4 wrap?

2 years late to the show... would you still recommend the 461 over 500i? I am a small owner operator and I have my nice climbing saw but now that I have some cash flow I am looking to upgrade my 372xp clone that got me started. (love that saw and its made me a ton of money but also exited to have my first pro saw that might be a bit more reliable) I have an 880 clone that has also been great for me for when I need 36 or 48 inch bars. Found a really clean 461 for $800 but also been looking at new 572xp, 462 and 500i. 10% stihl sale Thursday so I'm hoping to decide by then! I find a lot of mixed reviews for the 461 and that's what makes me a bit hesitant. I'm mostly about function, I have no brand loyalty and at least w my experience its all been about the model, taking care of your things and some luck. That being said I'd love any insight from someone who really knows saws in and out for my tree service style of use case!

Do you have to use that bigger cover when putting the wrap handle on it?

I suppose it depends how big your tree are. But I reckon if it’s just for firewood, it’s overkill. Think the best bar for a standard 500i is a 25” bar. If you want to use a 32” or longer, you need to use semi skip or full skip chain on a lightweight bar.

I can’t find anywhere a comparison of the Egan vs the wcs/red beard filters . I currently have the wcs but the fit is not great and if you have any oil on the collar it slides off as you tighten the band clamp down which is frustrating. I like the way the Egan attaches via the factory baffle bolts (462) but I’m just wondering if I’m just being finicky or the Egan is better?

Only thing I have to say is that I bit confused about the capacity; I am not sure when you say that this pen case will not fit larger pens, and then you end up fitting some of the largest, what you mean? Are you referring to the length of the pens, or to pens with some substantial girth? My understanding is that the case has no issues with the length, but fitting three thick pens might be an issue for this pen case. Is this correct? I bought two 044 Stihls in the early 1990s while logging at the family ranch in Montana. I ran 28 inch bars, used them hard, and they ran perfectly, year after year, without one trip to a saw shop for repairs. They still run great. I've used them lately to cut firewood, and I'm amazed that they still start and run as they shouild. Best saw every? For me? Yes!!!
