How many cm above the front channels should I raise the side speakers in a dolby atmos setup when I have properly positioned atmos speakers? Last, can we we get a video on single subwoofer placement? There's no denying the clinical dynamism of your showroom theatre and I'll bet any movie would sound spectacular there; but I can see the appeal of a stripclub theatre if you have your own set of "Rockettes", and with a removable pole no less! Quite the opposite of a auditorium theatre than can handle kiddie-show skits between screenings. I'm more of an art-deco movie palace kind of guy, or better yet, an Egyptian Theatre as private as a tomb, looking like a temple of sound! Bottomline: I appreciate your work and all the effort you put into it.

I have a totally inappropriate 7.2.4 system in my 13x16 bedroom/HT, but I enjoy it immensely. My front 3, unmatched subs (different 12" models) and each of my sort-of unmatched heights (different versions of the same speaker) are Klipsch and my surrounds, which are each corner my single chair, less than 2 feet away from my head, are satellites from an original Polk starter 5.1 system. My heights hang on the wall near the ceiling...and my chair is against the back wall. If I'm not too lazy, I'll move my chair about 3 or 4 feet forward so I can get better effects from my rear heights.

I think it looks terrible with motion smoothing off. I don’t think 24fps has anything to do with director intent. Moving to 60fps would triple the file size. Which is no doubt why avatar is only 24fps on disk. You couldn’t fit 60 fps on a disk.

Hear! Hear! Two things I'm sick of are complaints of the soap opera effect and videos of TV shows posted without the credits. If they're supposed to be complete episodes then nothing should be left out or else it's not complete. Oh and third, complaints about laugh tracks in sitcoms. Seriously when did our society become so petty with their complaints?

We need more legit, Professional calibrators out there that don't over charge people and actually Know what they're doing. I bought the Panasonic PX60U plasma back years ago and paid $248 for a calibration. (about $500 in todays $) it did look a little better than what I achieved, but barely. Then, 2 months later a site called plsamatvbuyingguide reviewed the tv saying it was "the best picture ever" and listed ALL of their settings on the site. I tried them and it was like getting a new TV. I was astounded. Then I was MAD for paying a calibrator that didn't even get close to the correct settings.....

Yeah, no! The sound should not just come from the center of the screen! The way that movies mix surround sound is stupidity at it's maximum! in a movie, the amount of times that a character is actually centered in the frame is equivalent of less than 3% of the full length of the movie, and the sound coming from the center when the character actually is not in the center causes a really jarring disconnection between what the spectator sees and what he hears. The only form of media that does this right is some (not all) but some games that support surround sound, where they will position the voices in 3D space, like Atmos was supposed to do, but people in Hollywood still, for some reason goes the old way about it! Nah, Hollywood needs to learn that sometimes the old ways are not the best ways! For me, my partner aren't much into movies so, I just omit the center channel, i sit in the center and my front pair of speakers will make a phanton center channel that will only work for who's sitting in the center couch but that also makes is less clear and helps to convince me that the sound is coming from the mouth of the actor and not from the center of the screen, because most of the times the actor's mouth isn't in the center, and let's not get into when there's two characters engaging in conversation in a widescreen movie and each are to one side of the screen, yet, their voices are still coming from the center... Pure nonsense... It's not hard to pan the voices between the 3 front speakers, why don't they just do that?

While I accept that this man believes what he is saying, he ignores the fact that humans have 2 ears pointing outwards. We gain orientation satisfactorily by this being matched to our brain's complex functionality. Just because a few film directors and producers in the late 20th century wanted to play around with audio feeds of an unnatural type does not mean that they understood human hearing. On the contrary, they did NOT care to understand it.

Good video with excellent advice. Even though I'm running an audiophile grade 5.2.4 setup with of sonus faber front stage speakers being sorted by an arcam avr20 boosted by a couple of matching power amps within a small 4 x 3.5 m (13 x 11.5 ft) living room, I have to say some of the biggest upgrades towards my listening experience has actually been some of the cheapest. 1. Getting the couch off the back wall will improve the perception of Bass immensely. Besides having the audio move around you within a surround sound setup is always a bonus 😊 2. Moving the stereo speakers away from nearby walls enhanced the two channel soundstage (great for music lovers) And last but certainly not least.. 3. Room treatment, I personally would rather listen to a $2,000 setup in a room that sounded great than listen to a $20,000 setup in a room that sounded crap. The sound of the room is everything. The funny thing is it's only when one addresses this problem that one actually starts to realise! Plus, if you're going to experiment rather than experimenting over a period of days, try experimenting over a period of weeks! In my experience, that's how long it took for my ears to adjust (acoustics can be a little obscure at first) And btw it doesn't necessarily have to be expensive either... carpet, curtains, drapes, blankets, plants, shelves and cushions, etc, to help absorb or scatter those standing waves. If interested, here's a little lazy ass demo, but bear in mind I'm no content creator, and I'm certainly no Steven Spielberg... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWWccplqbtClg8Usi=HppmPs0GAJ977Clu

Most center channel speakers are not designed properly, nor can fit under a TV/screen, when deployed standing up to eliminate the interference pattern. I went with a RSL CG23M not only for its quality/sound, but because it is designed to be installed in either orientation. It fits perfectly under my TV on a short console in the vertical orientation, thus eliminating the interference pattern typical with most other horizontal style centers.

When two speakers are set up correctly all the dialogue comes from the center too

Anton, Thank you for producing this video and explaining the need for a quality center channel and it's positioning. A good home theater is universally enjoyed. My 7.2.4 system is made up of Emotiva speakers and their MC-1 processor with mismatched amps. The center channel speakers is Emotiva's 3 way C1+. Even though my system is in the "budget" price range I am very happy with the audio from it. It is unfortunate that too many multi channel system owners feel that the surround and height channels need not be as good of quality as the LCR. Also, the more I learn about the average Russian citizen more I learn that we are more alike than our politicians would like us to believe. May we all become friends sooner than later. Wishing you all the very best in life.

With phantom, and if you are sitting in dead center, it is more accurate than a real center channel. For MLP, phantom center > real center. In processors, it's good to make a 2nd profile of you are alone watching a movie, to use a phantom

I've recently subscribed to your channel and really enjoy your content and particularly your theatre designs. I am amazed though that so many home theater enthusiasts always go to Lucasfilm and Dolby labs as the pioneers of multi-channel theatre sound when it was actually Cinerama and CinemaScope and Todd-AO who were the true pioneers of multi-directional sound on film. Cinerama used a 7-channel surround system. CinemaScope was discrete 4-track stereo with a mono surround. Todd-AO 70mm 6-track sound dominated with roadshow presentations from the 1950s into the 1970's when LucasFilm promoted what was termed baby-boomer matrixed stereo surround to make up for the decline in 70mm auditoriums during the 1960s. The baby-boomer Dolby surround matrix solidified the placing of dialogue in the center channel only as theatres started to shrink in the multiplex era. Only a few films have utilized the more effective panning-dialogue mixes from the 70mm 6-track days when there used to be 5 speakers behind the screen and voices effectively followed the actors' position on the screen. It still works effectively in a 3-channel front system if the mix hasn't been modified for home video by centering left and right channel dialogue pans into the center channel. Anyway, I look forward to your future videos as I check out your prior content.
