In Pet Semetary, he describes the tantrums of the main character's five year old daughter as "almost menstrual". Through out the book, the main character's wife is told what she is and isn't allowed to do while she's grieving her lost child. The main character (who is a doctor) has his doctor friend stay with her and make the decision that she is "not allowed" to attend her son's viewing. The husband also forces her to take valium.

I'm reading the Tower series and read The Stand. Yes absolutely he's sexist, particularly in the Dark Tower: Wizard & Glass. Any woman who wasn't young and desirable is described in such negative terms as angry, rejected ,miserable, saggy, dry ("down there")... he's said nothing neutral or positive about older women.

Im reading the long walk right now. Its so hard to ignore, the only time women are mentioned its because the main characters are objectifying them. None of the women have personalities, backstories, they're only physically described. Its always their boobs and butts and if they're a virgin or not.

Thanks for points it out! I just started the Dark Tower and got really confused with the first female character he introduced. I guess SK is an old fart and had a different upbringing, but if the book you read is kind of new it really is a disappointment.

Though I'm a big Stephen King fan, I have to say, I've questioned whether he's sexist or not. I came here because I'm reading Fairy Tale right now and like you, have noticed some subtlety sexist things and some a little more overt. Honestly, I've read probably 20 SK books and only recently did I notice this. He DOES have many, many very strong females characters so I'll give him that, but I've noticed that though they are main characters, it's not that often that they are the lead/ main character. I read an article a minute ago about his evolution regarding racism, sexism, LGBTQ inclusion and can see that he has, indeed, evolved so there's that, but sadly, this is a NEWLY published book I'm reading and I'm seeing it. Thing is, he's been wonderfully politically active, has a super strong wife who is an excellent writer in her own right and I feel like he's very open minded, especially for an older generation, white male. I won't stop reading him, but perhaps this could be brought to his attention. I think you did a great job here in describing the difference between his descriptions of male vs female characters. Maybe he's still in Twitter? Not sure. He may have boycotted lil baby Elon. Lol FYI, I haven't read the book you read. The Stand is my favorite, but it has been years since I've read it and now I'm wondering about female characters in it! Thank you!

I loved the stand, i first read it. But boy oh boy it is exrem sexist. He is exrem sexist in his writing. But he believes he is not and may try his best but he is still extrem sexist in his work. I read needful things and the only horrible thing is how stupid the characters are and the extrem sexism in it. And it is too long.

This is a terrible explanation of representation in literature... not once did u mention theories of realism and its relationship to 'the people' nor did you explain that your theory is routed deeply in marxist ideology. I'm not saying that what you try and show is not in fact the case, i just think your title implies you are going to explore representation in literature rather than simply saying 'read books by diverse authors' massive let down of a video. PS. You didn't give a single example.... you just said 'dont just read books about white rich people' as if it is inherently bad to be rich and white... Your description says 'helped me understand the importance of understanding situations through 'different' eyes' if you had done your research you would have maybe realised that it is through realism and new methods of representation that the 'different eyes' you describe aren't so different after all... sometimes you are the problem rather than the solution... have a good day

I love your take on this! 💙 The book was fun (I grew up in the 80’s), and I definitely took the obsession with that slice of pop culture as part of the dystopian impact. The poor isolated people in the future had a “golden age” relationship with the 80’s, ...although I agree that the author didn’t pull it off well. 🤖 It felt like the author used a wall of post-it stickers to arrange their writing patterns, and so stories never got to explore their own liveliness.

Love this peek into your world! 🪴 I’m also someone who had always read! Yet, being dyslexic and autistic, I had to find my own way of consuming books. Most of my youth was spent struggling through fantasy paperbacks and schoolwork, until audiobooks exploded onto the scene (of my public library). Following a suggestion of an autistic friend, I started listening to the books on 2x speed... and it rocked my world. Suddenly it was easy to understand and follow the stories! These days I consume about a book a day (including your recommendations) and the practice has expanded my world exponentially. I highly encourage everyone to increase both the quantity and quality of their books. Your brain will thank you! 🧠
