So a dilemma for us...my daughter doesn't think that 'over rotating' and doing the hops at the end of her throws is helpful. She says that it's from too much torque and not enough control...your thoughts??

Solid idea John and I remember doing some bar throws in college (don't know where it came from). One consideration is that standard netting/cages may not stop the bar from going through. If you have some welding skills, adding a "cap" that is 2-3" in diameter could improve safety (and make it easier to find in the grass).

Hello I'm 13 and I'm trying to learn how to throw a discus. My best in 63 feet an I'm trying to get 80 feet. I'm getting close but I can't figure out why my disc is pointing upwards when I throw it. I imagine that it's taking some good distance away, currently I'm learning how to spin while I'm throwing and I've gotten that down it's just my release and how fast the disc spins I'm really struggling on, I'm asking you here because I cant ask my dad to get onto a patreon even though I would love to get lessons on this.

Why is there tape on your pointer finger
@johnbowmandiscusАй бұрын
When I throw a lot my pointer finger gets pretty sore. I put the tape on it to protect it during practice.

1. foot placement - front foot half a foot more to the left 2. long wind up, shoulders parallel to ground 3. hip in front of shoulder 4. don't rush - let discus go as late as possible to transfer maximum power Will be throwing for the first time at a competition in 2 days... I've never tried it before and don't have the opportunity to tmr either. will update if i remember

very useful and clear coaching points for beginners. i just started to throw in Masters comp aged 70 and I've never been a thrower. Achieved just over 24m with this technique. Good stuff John 👍

Is it too early to teach the spin to larger middle schoolers (6ft+)? Should I foucs on the glide and stand throw techniques for now? The students that made the podium at districts last year seem ready to me but what is your opinion aobut progression of techniques and age?
