It's become a fiddle piece and dance tune but it started out life in 1910 as a popular tune with lyrics called Silver Bell. It was one of many tunes of that period written about love for an Indian maid. It was written by Percy Wenrich. The first record was made in 1910 by the Peerless Quartet singing it in barbershop style.

Guitars can play melody too.

My mother was in a weekly music group such as this. One of the songs they would play was Mary Dear. My mom’s name is Mary and I love this song - such a nice memory. I miss the group so much. And her, too.
