Can't even really say anything more, or to add, everything he said is spot on. The biggest act of rebellion, or to change the future marketplace, is to not participate in social medial. Even this comment I'm trping now is engaging with KZbin's business model to benefit the shareholders (that's wild to comprehend).

Would be easier it wasn't addictive.Its not like the average person picks his phone out of intention. Its out of habit 99% of the time, thanks to social media companies hijacking our brains. You cant rebel against these social media companies, unless people learn to rebel against their addictions.

We need to teach ourselves to put our phones away. I know it's obvious but that's the starting point: make an effort not to reach for your phone every time you have a thought or a spare moment or see something you like. Myself I make a point of intentionally not pulling out my phone when I board a train or sit down somewhere, then look around and see how almost every other stationary person has their heads down in their phone. Worse still people in company, all with their phones out. People must also realise that for folks with regular non-media 9-5 jobs, they will never have enough time in their life to review / relive all the personal content they are capturing. Take one photo of a nice moment then move on.

@@jirskyrjenkins1959 that last part is a great point. i’ve spent more time collecting and curating pictures and videos thinking about how i can look back on them one day instead of actually living my life, and who knows if all of these photos and videos could be lost anyways one day, if the internet shut down or something…

i’m reading russell brands 2014 ‘revolution’ (before it went all MAGA on us) and that’s the essence of what went wrong: capitalism made it so that nothing is for the good of the people, the planet, or the human race. every single sector of life is now about how big can we grow, how much money can we make; all without any regard for human life

"Surveillance capitalism operates through unprecedented asymmetries in knowledge and the power that accrues to knowledge. Surveillance capitalists know everything about us, whereas their operations are designed to be unknowable to us. They accumulate vast domains of new knowledge from us, but not for us. They predict our futures for the sake of others' gain, not ours. As long as surveillance capitalism and its behavioral futures markets are allowed to thrive, ownership of the new means of behavioral modification eclipses ownership of the means of production as the fountainhead of capitalist wealth and power in the twenty-first century." One day, we’ll recognize social media as one of humanity’s most detrimental inventions. I dont think humans are evolved for constant communication with hundreds, thousands and millions-it disrupts our natural development, fuels narcissism, ego, and hyper-individualism, and fractures the very fabric of society. Objectivity is already dead just because of this ability.
@Mr.Coffee576Күн бұрын
Its funny because I heard this same exact thing in 2012, when people complained about facebook being addictive. We had 13 years to do something about it. I think we all know deep down social media has been a detrimental invention, its just that there is no going back. The Pandora's Box has been open.

@@Zevviam it is a really difficult predicament man. I wish i could offer you something, but ur right, many hobbies take money… I would recommend maybe try going out of your comfort zone and trying new things , with me i started going more often on hikes (though i still use my phone for music lol). Sadly my favorite hiking spots in my neighborhoods all got burned down recently because of the wildfires here-it made me realize we have to go out and enjoy these places while we can because we have no idea if they’ll be gone the next day!! Our youtube watch later list isn’t going anywhere ! let the videos pile up, you can “watch later” but you can’t put off the moment of life right now . Hope this helped and wasn’t just yapping

We were never meant to have this much insight into each other’s lives. It’s caused the worst of us to succumb to greed and pettiness and then the algorithm gives them the floor and pushes it into everyone’s phone.
@runoke9 күн бұрын
We weren't meant to be anything. And greed and pettiness are as natural as anything can be. We started in close communities where everyone knew absolutely everything about everyone. In fact we are currently closer to natural state of things.
@zacharyjamesdixon8 күн бұрын
@runoke In close communities where “everyone” you could know was maybe like 100 people. It was a number your brain could healthily and naturally manage, and you actually knew who they were. Now it’s billions, they’re all strangers, and there’s never a break as it’s always right in front of your face so long as you’re holding your phone. It’s far too much and has started to make people not see people as real anymore. More like characters in a tv show or movie. This much insight into this many stranger’s lives doesn’t seem very natural.

For real! I remember the event that caused me to delete IG - I was having a lovely time on Xmas eve - the clouds were super low and there was a heavy fog in the sky. The christmas lights on my block were all lit up and reflecting light off of the waterdropets in the air, it was beautiful. Like a cotton candy sky... I went for a walk at 3am to really take it in and enjoy the silence of the night, and as I was walking I was thinking "I need to make an IG post about this". And it TOTALLY threw me out of the moment... I thought at that point that these apps are reaching their tendrils into our minds and taking over, impacting and manipulating our moment to moment experience of life, and how weird and terrible is it that we internalize it and become basically a voluntary extension of their power... It's the commodification of existence, one photo and YT short at a time.
@yeetyeetonthestreet-colinm11864 күн бұрын
@@mcharbo8726 damn this was a great read. I’ve had this experience tons of times and i’ve had to actively tell myself, no, not every moment needs to be romanticized to look back on through social media. i try to use it less and just live for that moment - it’s hard though when it becomes wired into you

But where did you find/view this? Social media..
@coachalexmiller12 күн бұрын
I hate to admit it becuase I love video games and youtube but, I genuinely think the only way to be truly happy/content/mentally well in this day and age is to basically drop out from social media, live on a farm, grow your own food, work hard, be close with your family and neighbords, but basically live very simply. Up with the sun, work with your hands, no sources of cheap dopamine to create tolerance/withdrawal. We have a lot of modern conveniences that are great - cars, medicine - way better than "the old days". I'm not glorifying everything, there's a reason people worked SO hard to get out of the jungles and caves and build houses, cities, to automate industry so life wasn't so brutal. I think we can have some level of modern life, but it's the digital age, the disconnection, the addictions to all sorts of substances / behaviors, that are causing so much harm now, and I don't see a way to participate in it and be well.

obviously I still use youtube, but I have my feed extremely curated and delete videos from my history all the time, but once I made the choice to delete facebook, all the other sites followed quickly. (edited to add Reddit to the list) facebook, instagram, twitter, netflix, amazon prime, and stopped watching and reading the news. just about everything billionaires want my eyeballs to watch and to occupy my brain. no more subscriptions to anything. companies don't make products to fit peoples needs. they are now trying to make consumers fit their products and to use those products how the company wants them to be used. i'm done with it all as much as I can. I'm glad to see someone like Bo come to the same conclusions I have started to come to.
