would something like an air-to-air heat pump based ERV work in the sub 1.5 ton situations?
@winstonsolipsist1741 Жыл бұрын
I see lots of comparisons to California. I don't know how smart it is to follow a state with as many problems as California. There is a reason the cost of living in California is so much higher than in Texas and especially Oklahoma. Every singe one of these recommendations will increase the cost of living hurting the very people your equity is supposed to assist. You will force the poor out of personal transportation and on to public transit restricting their freedom of movement. Your appliance and building regulations will increase the cost of housing leading to the post apocalyptical hellscape that is the homeless crisis seen in L.A. and San Francisco. Other than setting "targets", the states shown as having the best policies are also the most expensive places to live. Increasing costs via stricter regulations, for utilities will be passed down to the consumers. Have any of you tried to obtain some of these rebates the government offer? It is a nightmare of red tape and bureaucracy. EV credits only benefit higher income people. It will be years, if ever before lower income people will be able to afford EV's. Also, EV's are substantially heavier that ICE vehicles causing more wear on the roads yet they pay no road tax because the do not buy gasoline. Yet another boon for higher income people. The felt effective warmth provided by natural gas furnaces is much great than a heat pump and, once the outside air temperature drops below the effective heat transfer, a heating coil comes on completely negating the efficiency and increase the load on the grid substantially. Has anybody looked at the damage caused to the environment by all the refrigerants used by and leaked from these heat pumps? Again, all of these recommendations will increase the cost of living especially the lower middle class who can't afford an EV even with the credits and are just above the income level of people who will be getting funding. Not only will their cost of living increase but so will their taxes, direct and indirect.

What do you think about using 1/4" or 1/2" Wonderboard over plywood for waterproofing? I have a small area of plywood that will get a stucco coat. I plan to water seal the wood then cover it with Tyvek and then Wonderboard.
@ChrisDembinsky Жыл бұрын
Also if Wonderboard is used, would I still need lath and would it be considered a "dissimilar material" from block? It's a cement board so I think that could be considered "similar".
@eepartnershipSPEER Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisDembinsky Hi Chris - great question. Yes, you can use Wonderboard or any other concrete board over wood with 2 layers of underlayment and then apply stucco directly to the Wonderboard/concrete board without the need for lathe. Personally, I used 2 layers of 30# roofing felt under the Wonderboard. I think it’s better for this application. If you don't want to use Tyvek, I’d recommend 2 layers of their stucco wrap rather than 1 layer of Tyvek over waterproofing. You always want 2 layers of underlayment. Hope this helps.
@ChrisDembinsky Жыл бұрын
@@eepartnershipSPEER Very helpful. What about just one layer of peel-and-stick underlayment? I have some of that left from the roof. Also do you think 1/4" Wonderboard is good enough?
@eepartnershipSPEER Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisDembinsky You can use one layer of peel and stick and probably be fine but a roll of felt is $30 so I wouldn’t risk just one layer. Use the peel and stick as the bottom layer and cover with a layer of felt. The ¼” should be fine but I’d use a 6-8” on center fastener pattern. You want to make sure it stays on the wall.

Hi Blake - thanks for the question. Texas is a home-rule state, and each city is allowed to adopt its own code cycle. That said, Texas is currently under the 2015 IECC, but several cities in North Texas have adopted 2015, 2018, and 2021. @eepartnershipSPEER Жыл бұрын
Hi Mario. Good question. Beginning January 1st 2023, you can no longer use any equipment in the South that is not labeled as being tested per the new SEER2/EER2 testing standards. If it's installed (tied in with power) before that date it will be accepted after that date to be completed, but after that it will not. The bright yellow Energy Label will say SEER or SEER2. Only the SEER2 is acceptable after Jan 1st.

Thank you very much for this presentation. I have learned alot of valuable information from this that I will definitely be applying! As precise as you were about so many things here I believe that the definition of a "ton of cooling" capacity deserves a better, more precise definition than what was given around 43:00. Refrigeration was originally sized in terms of how many tons of ice it could make per day. The latent heat of freezing of water is 144BTUs per pound * 2000 lbs/ton = 288,000 BTUs/ton. Divide that by 24 hrs/day = and you get 12,000 BTUs / hr / ton. The way you expressed it didn't account for the full day at 12,000 BTUs/hr to make (or melt) one ton of ice.

I installed a daikin this weekend, and tons in the past. You guys must NEVER ask a service mechanic for advise cause the service valves tight to the side and pointing down is ridiculous. You guys know most of us are using recovery tools these days and you make it near impossible to use them.
@pridemechanical8152 жыл бұрын
Exactly I mean one of the manufacturers could actually do something that helps us contractors like maybe designing a machine the size of a vacuum pump that can pressurize a single nitrogen tank with fresh nitrogen from the air so us techs could put that on our vans and never have to go to the supply house again to swap out heavy cylinders?

Is there a cost difference between timer and motion sensor system ?
@eepartnershipSPEER2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael - Yes there is a cost difference as a cheap timer can be as little as $5. It’s insignificant though as, depending on installation needs, a sensor is not much more.

Great video. I just bought a house and the flex duct is lets say a "Mess". I'm not an HVAC tech but have done many commercial inspections and when the home inspector showed me pics of this flex I knew it would be a problem and the unit and ductwork are just a year old. I could send pictures if you like for use in other videos, just let me know. My attic is very big and I have 2 returns one on each end of the house, which I'm glad there is, but I have no clue as of yet whether or not it's in the right locations and/or sizes. With that said, there are numerous issues with the duct, you name it and it is in my attic. All the duct will have to be disconnected, stretched, 90's and 45's, and sleeves added along with multiple straps/hangers added. The plenum looks way too small also, but have to verify. A question. I'd like to evaluate whether or not the system ductwork is sized properly, has the right size plenum, and has the right size return air duct sizes and locations. What resource would be best for me to accomplish that task on my own? Thanks

@eepartnershipSPEER3 жыл бұрын
Douglas, the following is from our Energy Codes Manager. Enjoy! It’s just so darn problematic… crap HVAC installs. Reason being there isn’t a “right” way. You can do it 1000 ways as long as it’s done by the manuals (ACCA J, S & D) and manufacturer’s instructions. Though there are 1000 ways to install a duct system, when it comes to flex duct, it should ALWAYS be run as straight as possible, stretched as tight as possible and sealed well with mastic. Verifying what is installed is not simple and knowing that it isn’t installed by the book isn’t really helpful as you almost certainly already know this. You would need software to rebuild the loads, equipment selected and duct design to see if the system is correctly installed (ACCA approved software - www.acca.org/standards/approved-software). Odds are the system was installed by typical rules of thumb in the industry and will not stand up to the scrutiny of an evaluation. That being said, if the unit and ductwork are just a year old, I’d recommend working with what I have. If you are comfortable disconnecting, stretching, and sealing the ducts, you should be able to improve the system. Outside of that and regular maintenance, I’d be leery of trying to modify the system much more. If you asked 10 HVAC companies what to do to improve your system you would almost certainly get 10 different answers. At SPEER we are working to change the industry and encourage to proper use of the ACCA manuals but it is a slow process. Certainly, educated homeowners like yourself can help drive the industry forward as they demand properly installed systems.
