I use a small plug in pot that boils water with wide top. It is about same size as your crockpot. I can cook mac and cheese, heat up soup or left overs and does not take hours to cook.

Oh, my goodness, I am laughing at your adventures! The security guard coming to tell you that you were on private property - I'm sure it was gorgeous there though! ;) And the bathroom at The Ivy - gobsmacked! Trying to do a simple thing like mail a postcard and what all happened! Then running back to the hotel and seeing the beautiful roses. What an adventure!! Your layover sounds like it should be an episode of a TV show.
