Very helpful! When you do this do you do it with a specific project in mind? Do you typically weigh out a certain amount of fibre? ie. a pair of socks usually take 100 grams of sock weight yarn for a pair. Would I then weigh out multiples of 100? Suggestions?

Beautiful yarn and beautiful video. I do your method with the "more than a figure eight." I have found that if I don't weave the twine in exact spots, when I go to set the twist, those strands of yarn outside of the tie-offs "wander" and can contribute to a tangle. I use a popsicle stick and weave it in. I then turn the popsicle stick 90 degrees (sort of what a heddle on a loom does), and then I can over-under with the twine or acrylic with precise accuracy.

You are an amazing instructor so patient. Now I have to be brave enough to buy a spinning wheel. I have a rigid heddle, a 4shaft loom and a band loom. I have crocheted, knitted, needle point and embroidery since I was about 10 and sewn at different times in my life so at 74 I thought I would try spinning and weaving.

Janet, I have some Corriedale top (or roving? It looks like your top, so perhaps it’s top). It has a bit of a musty smell to it. What would you suggest I do to remove that scent, please? Yours in Gratitude

Janet, what an amazing teacher you are! I’m so grateful to have found your beginners spinning lesson 1 video. I stopped spinning about 18 years ago when we inherited our niece’s dog who, unfortunately, also liked to join in the spinning activity - ouch. Now, my old wheel was similar to an Ashford Elizabeth and was a double drive. My new Lendrum, which arrived yesterday, uses Scotch tension and, spinning top, I ended up with pigtail, after pigtail, after pigtail as I attempted to learn longdraw!! Craziness, for sure!!! Needless to say, I had quite a mess on my bobbin - ‘though I had LOTS of fun! Thanks to your video, I feel I’ll be able to do more successful spinning this evening. I look forward to learning to spin properly as I work my way through your videos. Yours in Gratitude

Dear Janet, Omg. I just I found your channel. When I was starting out with wool, the year 2008, I was on my own. I was just getting back on my feet after a big job lose . . . and there where so few videos about knitting , fiber arts. So I took a break from working wool until just recently. After so many moved on up to heaven, I realist why I quit knitting or took the long time out, My arthritis. Who would think knitting is painful? So while throwing and giving away my junk I decided spinning is just fine. Thank you for the help Paul Nason Madison WI P.s. Thank you, Janet keep up the good work ! :) :)

Terrific, just remember to rotate your carder slowly sometimes Alpaca can be quite delicate passing through a carder. What proportion are you intending to blend? If it’s for a garment remember Alpaca drapes and can drop in a garment if in high proportions to wool.

@@janet-myspinonthings7016 Janet. Thank you for the quick reply. I was planning to do 25% Finn 75%Alpaca. I’m in the process of sampling now. The Finn percentage does look a bit sparse. I was wondering about that. My drum carder is old and doesn’t have a brush so I was only able to get one pass. It was enough to accomplish layering so that I could pull off strips to hand card. I considered combining, but the cards are portable and allow for more opportunity on the go. I’m one of the crazies that like hand carding, so I’m good with that. Your help is very much appreciated. jacki

Oh boy! I’ve just discovered your channel and watched this through. I started spinning when I got a wheel two months ago, and I have instinctively used this method outlined here. I found the old way gave me cramp so my hand decided to do this! My hands have knit for years (70) so are more supple than most my age, but I still do get stiff. Thanks! Now to watch all the rest……!

Same here. I only started spinning a little less than a year ago. Back issues mean I need to be very careful, bad eyes mean I need to find ways to see and feel what I’m doing better. Holding the fibre this way means more relaxed shoulders, less strain on the hands, no tendency to hunch over when you want to see, more fingers ’checking’ your fibre. It also means you are smoothing out the fibres more which is important when spinning lace weight and frog hair yarns, which is what I prefer doing: less breakage of the singles.
