Cool - these things are a nightmare. I live in Nth. Taranaki and we also have a regional variety of Sophora (or so i believe) with it's population centred on Mokau or Awakino?

Oh dear, I keep finding new topics that I'd love love love to get deeper into! Can a human be interested in ALL naturl things? Am I becoming a jack of all trades? Thanks for making it precise, short and to the point!
@jordanstewartnz27 күн бұрын
@zaubergarden6900 absolutely can be a jack of all trades 👌 depends what this knowledge is for too. If you work in ecology/conservation, a generalised understanding would be invaluable for being helpful on an assortment of projects! If it's a hobby then feel free to learn about anything and everything you find interesting 🙏

The only word in this video I am familiar with is epiphyte. Is it parasitic or symbiotic? What is the zone and region?
@jordanstewartnzАй бұрын
@anthonylastname942 Sorry, definitely not enough context from this short on its own! It's a short clip from a full length vid (linked to short) that provides a little more detail. It's not parasitic and is perhaps a one-way symbiotic relationship (comensalism) where the fern benefits from climbing the tree and the tree isn't benefited or harmed from the relationship. This is from the Northland region of New Zealand, though this species is widespread throughout the whole country 🙂
@clarepower4081Ай бұрын
Far out... the asparagus climber!!! I can't see past it! My little shop of horrors species! here's hoping someone deals with it before it strangles the endemic species you are filming. Great information... And it would be very interesting to go back in a year and check to see the growth of both native and the invasive species. :)
@jordanstewartnzАй бұрын
Absolute nightmare huh! Seems a bit of a lost cause to eradicate sadly! Little tuberous roots break off and regrow if you try to pull it out, and their berries are a tasty favourite of the birds here so it spreads quicker than it can be removed 😅
@clarepower4081Ай бұрын
@jordanstewartnz it is controllable. We have 20 odd hectares. It can be cut back before it berries and what can't be dug out does respond to targeted careful spraying of a mix of systemic herbicides. Hate using it unless absolutely necessary. But it will destroy the bush otherwise. It was out of control here and will be ongoing problem but it doesn't survive as well once under which canopy given the chance.

I recently discovered your channel, and subscribed! I have been really enjoying your videos about NZ's amazing plants.😃 I have never been to Northland, so it's really cool to get some insight about the plants up there. Hopefully you decide to make a video down here in the South Island too someday, since we also have many nice plants (especially in the mountains)!
@jordanstewartnzАй бұрын
@clayalbatross496 thank you! Yes I'm definitely looking forward to any opportunities to get out of northland and explore some other areas. Especially, as you said, the alpine zones have some really unique plants I'd love to see!

Like this... format and presentation. One small thing that i would find helpful (and, by a completely unjustified extension, others may also) would be to just leave the ID script on the screen for a little longer... just long enough to react / decipher / take a note? Lkd&Subd. Best wishes from a QEII'd paradise on Mt. Messenger! Cheers. PS: i think your Miro is a Matai.

Thank you! Great suggestion about leaving the text on the screen for longer 😁 And I think you may be right about it being matai! Oops, haha, I did not take a close look at that one... Hi Jordan, you are making a really good series here, and great to see it with NZ plants, thanks! Just one thing, when it shows up as a playlist on youtube, it plays backwards from Part 4 here down to Part 1. Maybe there are some levers and buttons in your youtube control panel so you can re-order these videos to advance correctly from Part 1 onwards. All the best with growing your channel :-)

The Mexican Fleabane is called Maggie Barry Weed, on account that it became extremely popular when she hosted the Palmer's Garden show and promoted this plant almost every week for a couple of years. This and Pampass are the two fastest weeds to have colonised far and wide in NZ.
