I think most fans realize he's a rookie, and that it will take some time to get him completely involved with the system. It ain't the fans who are pushing him to start.

Being mad about the draft capital given up for JJ and Turner is weird. If your two 1st rounders end up being busts, is having some day 3 picks somehow going to save the franchise?

Darnold had an amazing sophomore year at USC (I watched all his games), but his junior year he was forcing things and wasn't as good. Similar to Caleb, but Williams was/is far more talented. I wasn't that high on Sam coming out because his play had regressed in college. How much do I put on Sam vs. situation in the NFL. I'd put 75% of it on Darnold. Players may have lesser situations than others, but these are still NFL level coaches and a player owns his own tape. Could Sam "flourish" under KOC. Possibly, but I think that ceiling is 20th-21st best QB. Good enough to start for a team, but not nearly good enough to take them anywhere. Great guy, and I think he's the right "fit" for this situation.

Does any "reasonable" person believe there aren't going to be growing pains with McCarthy? He's going to have his ups and down, and that's just the way it's going to be. The key here is progression. How is JJ responding to coaching and how well/quickly is he picking things up. If I wanted to go back 40 years I could find so many write ups about HOF QB's in their first camp having bad days. Heck, vets have bad practices. Everything we're hearing with JJ is that there is good and bad, and that's normal. So far, so good from what I can tell.

Case Keenum's 7 picks with the Vikings really upset the ugly man. Ugly man doesn't realize that Keenum was able to throw ducks all over the field and complete them because of how well he saw and anticipated. His arm talent is why he's not a starting level QB, not his decision making.

Way i see it you have 2 main QB out of 4 , OTAs and into camp the 1st & 3rd QB on different sides of the field get the reps, perfect Both Sam and JJM need the work and process to learn/absorb playbook/ show where they are strong and weak at plus where they have progressed since their last stint( SD MIGHT be more of history reference from 2-5 years) As joint camps go and preseason will show progression and retention for both....its too hard to see where it is at this time..... better idea when they get shared practices against other teams 1s seeing how they stack up( JJM Might not get quantity of time in that situation)

As for JJM being in the run offence of Michigan, yes not as many opportunities for him to learn passing situations/workload.... i would say the way he handled it was very good at highest level. Execute , focus and when called to pass execute focus.....hes more willing to be flexible and take direction and excel. He could have bellyached , screw u do his own things at times....doesnt seem his style. Hes more ready for the NFL in someways, doesnt need to scramble out of the pocket at the slightest show of pressure. Your Fields, Allen, Murray Once he grasps the nuances of NFL he will be a well rounded QB who has mobility. Develop his throwing skills equally past the Fastball I may get antsy but im prepared till next year if thats when he sees the field

Guy in the middle already creating an environment to hate on Sam even if he performs well. “Qb’s usually pick apart teams in preseason.” No they don’t. Also Sam Darnolds arm talent isn’t “average”. It’s well known and talked about from people in the league he has an elite arm. It’s crazy to me when folks don’t get behind their starters. Makes absolutely 0 sense. JJ McCarthy is literally working on his mechanics. Stop applying unnecessary pressure.

I like JJM in the 3rd spot , so on that side of the field he will be getting the majority of throws, best of the group If he was #2 than hes getting the 2nd throws after Darnold. So ideally for Vikings both your top 2 QBs( or projected) are getting the workload they need.....maybe JJM becomes 3rd QB for a large portion of season......it is a process

Phil on Kirk Cousins: are we supposed to believe that every offensive line he played behind was garbage? That all his receivers were bad? That NO coaches knew what they were doing? Judd on Darnold: Well, he came into a really bad situation in the Jets. Then he went to another train wreck with the Panthers but a year with the niners he learned a lot" Phil on Kirk: a great QB should be able to lift his team to the playoffs. Judd on McCarthy, a #10 overall, 1st round pick: Be patient with him. Oh the irony.

If Darnold was that good, he would be like Matt Stafford for the Lions, he would still be in New York. He is certainly not a top 3 prospect in the past 10 years, hell he went #3 in his own class! He is getting severely overrated. 1st round busts would be turning into great players all the time if it were true that being in a bad situation was 90% of their problem, and yet the vast majority of 1st round busts do not turn their career around given a second chance. Or a third chance. Or on their fourth team like Darnold.

You spent a number 10 pick on JJ. I truly think this team is going to really struggle this year. It's a given this team will have a top 10 pick in the draft in 2025. Every team needs 2 QB's on the roster. It should not be a given that JJ is the future for the next 5 years. If Sanders is there for us at our pick the Vikings should do the right thing and draft him. It's only one year of working with JJ and bringing Sanders on will give us the best shot at getting a true future QB. It's a nice story to see how pumped JJ is to be on this team. The reality is he was basically the 4th option at finding a QB going into the future and the Vikings owe him nothing in terms of bringing in competition. If it takes 2 years to get your guy, that's not a bad situation going into the future.

These takes about McCarthy on PD have been absolutely terrible. Guy is looking the best so far of any of the rookie QBs and Mackey, Judd, etc. have been wringing their hands and wanting to coddle him like he is some fragile porcelain doll. They would rather throw away the season with a journeyman backup that turns the ball over and crumbles under pressure than find out if McCarthy will be as great as many of us think he will become. Coller on Purple Insider, who was almost unwatchtable pre-draft with his man crush on inferior NFL QB prospect Maye and inability to objectively analyze McCarthy because of it, has come around and is now the voice of reason and sanity on Darnold and McCarthy. He recognizes the simple truths that it is highly improbable that Darnold becomes more than he has proven to be already and that McCarthy looks really promising for a rookie off of his first week of OTAs. Mackey seems intent on trolling his own fanbase and tearing PD down while Judd is afraid of his own shadow and terrified about giving McCarthy his opportunity to excel. It has been an almost 180 degree shift since the draft. Are the PD crew just changing their format to become click bait and scream their bad takes from the mountaintops? There are plenty of shows for that already. Missing the more measured and consistent opinions from the past.

They've said repeatedly they want McCarthy to start when the coaching staff thinks he's ready to. If he needs a redshirt season it's best for him and the team long-term. If he shows he's ready week 1 he will start.
@intrepidfool
@intrepidfool 7 сағат бұрын
@@edward_kenway532gaming3Not really, though. They say start when ready but then act like he is a year away. From all accounts, he is ahead of Willams, Daniels, Nix, Penix, and certainly Maye. Yet they act like redshirting him just because will somehow be good for him. There is zero evidence to support this take. Some QBs start early and succeed, some fail. Some start late and succeed, some fail. There is no time machine to look at 50 QBs starting or not and track how that individual’s play would differ. Some guys just have the ability to play at the next level and some don’t. Mahomes would have been elite no matter what. Darnold would have failed no matter what. If the Jets had drafted Mahomes, Gase or whomever would still have a job and being talked about as a future HOF HC. McCarthy will have the playbook and offense down during training camp. The minor footwork and other adjustments that every rookie QB (and every QB going to a new offensive system) need to make are almost insignificant and won’t be an issue. (He doesn’t need an overhaul like Maye, just minor tweaks for their specific choices around timing. And every rookie QB will improve over time with accuracy, touch, and mechanics but there are no glaring deficiencies in McCarthy’s game that prevent him from starting right away.) If he can get the ball out on time to the correct read, he should start. His history shows that he will be successful and he has looked the part so far in training camp. Darnold is a journeyman backup that sees ghosts and turns the ball over. He isn’t the answer. Unless KOC and KAM are supremely confident that a 6 win lost season with Darnold won’t get them fired, McCarthy starts.
@intrepidfool
@intrepidfool 7 сағат бұрын
@@edward_kenway532gaming3They are falling into the modern zero accountability bullshit where everyone is a victim. Was Darnold a victim of his coaches? You could as easily claim that the coaches were a victim of Darnold? How about instead just that the coaches and Darnold were all bad? Let them be responsible for their own failures? Giving QBs credit for success but blaming their failure on others is some crazy spin. Darnold simply isn’t a good NFL QB in the games as he cannot handle pressure. Time to find out if JJ is wired for success like I think he is. If he fails, he isn’t good enough. Period. No amount of hand holding or fear based hesitation will change that. You take let the guy take his shot and hope he is the next superstar.
