for some reason, the version of Phoenix I like more is the Atari 2600 one, Arcade and C64 seems somehow slower and clunky.

So, why only compare these 2 versions? - I get that this C16/Plus4 version is fairly new and it does look absolutely stunning. ❤ - But if you're going to make a comparison video, you might as well bring as many ports into the fold as you can find, right? - On the ZX Spectrum it is called "Pheenix" and the C64 version is called "Eagle Empire". - The Amstrad CPC's is just called "Phoenix" and the Amiga version is called "Mega Phoenix". - And those are just the ones I can recall off the top of my head. I bet there is a whole slew of ports for many of the other Retro's out there... like BBC Micro, ATARI, NES, SNES, Sega, and possibly some of the Sony Playstations... yes, many of the later platforms have also gotten remakes of quite a few of the old classics.

@@GeorgesChannel Indeed, a very rare and special feature for a port. - My first encounter with this game was on the ZX Spectrum, which was my first computer. My second computer was the C128, and I have been searching for decades for the C64 version. Not knowing that it wasn't called "Phoenix" or "Pheenix", but "Eagle Empire" on the C64. Which I only first realized a little over a year ago, when watching a video by Robin Harbron of the YT-channel "8 Bit Show And Tell", where he takes a nerdy deep-dive into the machine-code of the game, to find and fix a bug with the final boss battle in the cracked version. To make this even more special for me, when he is showing us the bug, he is playing the game with this joystick that I had 3D-Printed, build and donated to him. Obviously not knowing that I have been looking for this very C64 version for decades. Unfortunately, you can't just go find this video yet, as Robin hasn't released it from being "Patreon Only" yet. - But needless to say that this game has become rather special to me, and I just love to see any variations of it... especially such a gorgeous version on a most underrated system like the C16/Plus4 series.

@@Zhixalom Thank you for this nice comment! Nice to meet the creator of the special controller for Robin. He makes fantastic content. You seem to love Phoenix as much as me an i really love to learn about the C64 variation. Its veryhard to port the original arcade feeling on an 8bit. He didi a great job on the plus/4. If TCFS and co-genius collegues would put their hands on this project, i think they would do it almost perfect.

3:57 I can still remember the first time I saw/played this game back in 1981. It was in Larkins wee shop at the bottom of the street in Letterkenny (county Donegal, Ireland). I thought it was incredibly futuristic at the time Ha ha! ....the strange thing is that I'm only, after all these years, realizing that the music tis the Classical Guitar piece "Romance"! With the new cross-tools on PC I can create much more magnificient titles I could ever imagine, just think about the converted HFLI gfx and the editors (Plus4emu's converter and latr some more let us create). Not a bad attempt for the Plus/4. After the success of the PET in business, Commodore were obsessed with computers for business, even the Commodore 64 was initially sold for business, but it had excellent gaming capabilities and sound making it a hit. The Commodore Plus/4 was another failed business attempt, but inferior to the C64 for gaming a few years later, unsurprisingly it flopped, but the worst was the Commodore 16 they spent a fortune advertising, only 16K in 1984 with inferior hardware, terrible. Later was the Commodore 128, but the vast majority of people barely used anything except 64 mode and it was rarely used for business. The Amiga saved Commodore, sadly it was all downhill again after that.

So the playback of the rendered screenshots is going to read a file from disk and replace every pixel on the screen? It seems like that would be too slow. I'm just trying to clarify the details of how it works.
@GeorgesChannel
@GeorgesChannel 26 күн бұрын
Its possible. Look out for the "Bad apple"-demo which was ported to all kind of platforms. In this case i use an emulator, which of course can load frames much much faster then the real machines. But with compression and buffering you can achieve this result. It has been done.

The slowdown is a bit odd. The plus 4 is using basically the same CPU as the arcade cabinet and at a higher clock speed (1.76mhz), though presumably it has to get involved with the graphics while the arcade cabinet had the vector graphics unit.

Why do they not have a ZX [space] ./ control scheme? It would mimic the arcade control panel fairly well. The monochrome version should be able to run in a higher resolution and better emulate the vector graphics.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation what happens in the code. I really enjoyed your presentation ! :-) BTW I noticed two issue in the code I originally uploaded: 1) I made the mistake in the code I go first to GRAPHIC mode, then setting the colors. This is a wrong sequence from me. Your SCNCLR required because I cleared the screen with with the default colors, not the new ones. I dunno why I did not detect this... So setting first the colors, then giving the GRAPHIC1,1 command will make the SCNCLR command (you rightfully added) unnecessary. --> Even smaller code 🙂 2) I also promised a better looking star. Just made it. Not perfect, but a little better. 60 DRAW1,160,9 TO 166,23 TO 151,14 TO 169,14 TO 153,23 TO 160,9 Possible improvements: 3) I really like the dotted look of the pinetree, but if anyone wish to create more dense tree with more dots (and does not mind the slower drawing) then the STEP number need to be decreased to 0.05 or even less. It will make the drawing more dense, but will be much slower. Or can make is faster changing the STEP from 0.1 to 0.2. 4) If we would make this tree in Graphic3 mode, the horizontal resolution would drop to 160 pixels, and it requires the recalculation of the horizontal pixels. BUT if you draw the tree and the star with Color 3 (Draw3,...) after you finished the drawing, you can do a simple palette animation I mean changing the Color3 afterwards with FOR cycles, it will change the color of the full tree. (or the tree could be drawn with green Color1, and draw only the star with Color 3, and you can color cycle only the star) Thank you for the great show!
