After that backhand slap, that hand kind of "snaking" around, maybe "Leaking"? Anyway, it Leaks/Snakes around to deliver a "Will Smith" slap. That movement transitioning between the back-slap and the front-slap looks "key" to me... The "Inner Hook"... Ah yeah! That is slick... I like it... Thanks for sharing your Praying Mantis knowledge in this video!

There's a technique like this in the ITF TaeKwon-Do form, Hwa Rang. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4q6l3WYad12jdU) It's taught as a backward sliding elbow. Recently, I started thinking that application was wrong. I was thinking that it was possibly (a) an arm drag that allowed you to get behind your enemy..maybe so you could escape. (b) a leg tackle created by grabbing the arm and then rotating and sliding the body whilst pressing the elbow joint with the shoulder. (c) A joint lock against the elbow done via the same procedure as (b) (d) NOW ..you have shown me that it can ALSO be a sliding elbow as was stated in the official application. So, it can be MANY things. Thank you for enlightening me Laoshi. I very much appreciate the knowledge you've imparted.

Btw, the slant/diagonal strike from the twist stance was the way I was taught the move in person by Shifu Sun De Yao. I realize that some of his other students were taught this move from a horse stance. Either stance works for the application.

Hello Master, first, thank you for the videos. i would like to take some advises from you. I am 36 years old and overweight (134 kilos), and i wold love to train kung fu, specially mantis style. Do you think it is possible with my age and weight? thank you very much. Paul
@mooyingmantis
@mooyingmantis 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the famous Seven Star Mantis master, Fan Xudong, weighed about 300 lbs.. So weight does not need to be a hindrance in mantis. 36 yrs old is still very young. I am 58 yrs old and train/teach regularly. Good luck with your training!

I'm having trouble hearing the audio through my miserable laptop speaker. Are you using bung 崩 and da 打 to describe the character of the reverse mantis hook strike? I'm assuming this the case given the context of gou lou chuen offensively. And on that point, I've grown into the belief that given our culture and the prevalence of martial arts (western boxing) that by nature avoid the bridge, it may be beneficial to view intercepting as a more relevant key to accepting an attack than the traditionally taught gou lou tsai that everyone usually starts with (which would make sense if this were old China and people fought you by utilizing the bridge as opposed to avoiding it). What's your opinion here?
@mooyingmantis
@mooyingmantis 8 жыл бұрын
+c johnson I am using 崩 and 爪. I agree with you about the bridge. We use the gou offensively against the opponent's raised guard, as mentioned in the video.

Lifting Hands Arm Movements Place the left hand forward at abdomen level in a left Small Hill Climbing stance. Raise the left palm to head level slightly to the right of your centerline. Rotate the waist until the right shoulder is forward, while lifting the right palm to face level slightly to the left of your centerline. Rotate the waist until the left shoulder is forward and strike forward to the enemy’s diaphragm with the left fist. Footwork Shift back while performing the left and right rising blocks. Shift forward as you execute the middle level strike. Use-age This technique is used to defend against any forward thrust to your chest or head when your arms start at a low position.

Did you get a chance to learn the whole form? I know I love this form. Its so straight forward that even a beginner could guess many of the applicaitons. I hope you post a video of the form one day. Also, I was trying to do some research on this style Mantis, and in doing so I found a good video here on KZbin, it appears to be related:Lan Jie

Yes, I learned the entire form when I trained in Qingdao, China. It is a very straightforward, no frills form with many practical and vicious techniques. I am one of only three people authorized to teach this form in the USA. So, I doubt that I will ever post the entire form on KZbin.
