This documentary is a complete disgrace. Unbelevable, how a crime can be portayed so sympathericaly. Notice, that it is totally one-sided. Have we heard anyone from the crew, or families of those who were killed?? What about that guy in a suit, killed just because they thought he was an undercover officer? What about a stewardess crippled for life, and the one shot dead because she ran for her life? Did we hear their stories? Cold blooded criminals are portrayed as nice guys, freedom seeking fighters against a totalitarian regime. In fact, they were over-privileged seekers of a good life no matter what, nothing more. They were not human rights activists like Sakharov or Solzhenitsyn, they were spoiled, selfish people, not stooping at killing other human beings for their benefit. The film implies that those killed, were killed during the crossfire. They were not. They were all killed before the special forces started the operation. In fact, the film doesn’t offer any facts at all. We do not learn anything about what happened on that plane. Is there a reason for that? Those killed, were killed by the hijackers. They started killing people straight away, which means that they were planning to start killing people. Moreover, they were horribly cruel to all the passengers, forbidding to help those wounded, forbidding to use the toilet, telling them that they were all going to die anyway. 7 people dead. Luckily we heard some wintesses (like the family in a private house backyard) who are quite unanimous in their attitude and help God they disembarked the plane alive. I understand what ideas were washing brains of those talanted youngsters but thought a lot why those guys were THAT brutal. However, the events that happened just 7 years after, do explain a lot. Georigans fought their brothers Georigans just because they split to rally around two leaders - pragmatic Sheva and fanatic Zviat and nobody was going to loose. Emotional nation - yes, indeed, and with young people having wrong (or wrongfully precepted) ideas of "freedom" and "lighthouses" in life unfortunately bloodshed and disaster become inevitable. What happened next - a decade of powerty and people escaping not for freedom but to earn for piece of bread and support kids and elderly relatives. Some - yes, to the West, but some to Turkey and Russia. I met many of those guys in different parts of the world, working like hell and dreaming not of "liberated Georgia" but to make a living. A lesson to learn.

You are wrong Navigator/Sturman was the one who started shooting first he killed one and wounded another after that hijakers responded also special forces did shoot them from outside. Those guys were indeed privileged and made very wrong choice but they were neither cold blooded killers nor freedom seekers.

But even if the Sturman fired first (his duty, by the way) who could shoot at crew members (precise close range shots) if one attacker shot dead innediately and two other seriously wounded and discouraged? The group members were inteneded killers. One example is the guy they shot first - small rank boss in a smart suite they "mistook" for KGB agent. A hit to his head with a wine bottle and then a precie shot to his ear. No chance to make it and it were not special forces who did it. Same with a pilot on holiday (asking the "wedding procession" to reduce noise - during boarding) who travelled as a passanger and took a few bulltets again as close range - precise shots - he made it by miracle but became disabled and left forces. Recommend to read|/watch the interview with Sturman Gasoyan - but probably only available in Russian (and maybe Georigan). This guy is alive and kicking. He moved to live to Russia, now 68 y.o.

@@jfarmerswatermelon6061 I read a lot trying to understand this. And still puzzled with many facts. Georgia is really a "Chinese box" if you get deeper into history. Zviad seems to be a fanatic and rather inconsistent one. I.e. he once promised to cleanse one ethnic group (Muslim one - probably one of Dagestahni groups) for being not Georgians and not Orthodox Christians wrongfully living on a Georgian land. On the other hand, he relied on Chenens (not really a friendly or relative nation), used its blood-thirsty warriors in war operations and made big buddies with Chechen leaders - even was taken to shelter in Chechnia being critically wounded. While Sheva - yes, a corrupted Soviet breed leader as many of his "brothers" in other post-Soviet states incl. Russia. A lot was stolen (leaving alone war desturctions) - so powerty is inevitable.

@@TheJbpasha one of the freedom seekers, a friend of a hijacker, tells how they wanted to go to London or Australia one day...What happened next, in not so remote future? After a few years of sheer bloodbath (between Georgians too!) a decade of total poverty forced young people to move - to the West (for most skillfull), to Russia, to Turkey, wherever they could find any job to feed themselves and take care of families. Any jobs - including impressive downshifts. This lasted till 2003 when a kinda pro-Western politician took power and started pumping in Western money and life turned to better. That is how they used the freedom from so "ugly" Sovier regime? This is not the best exampmle really. And most Soviet republics but few rich of oil ended up same way - if not war, then poverty and massive escape of youngsters.

Сейчас они на зарплате у Запада, проводят соотвествующую политику (Грузия, украина, прибалтика). Но история циклична, на новом этапе они воссоединятся с русским народом в общее мощное государство.

@@TheJbpasha в Советской Грузии (как, впрочем, и Прибалтике) националистическое движение было всегда сильным и имело вес (в отли чие от той же Украины). Но вот получили они свободу и как воспользовались? Стали мочить друг друга с жестокостью, как эти "свободолюбцы" в самолете...Мог бы еще понять конфликт с абхазами (народ другой веры и культуры), но грузин на грузина, батоно на батоно. В Прибалтике было в этом плане получше, никто не стрелял, но нищета имела место быть везде (кроме Эстонии, разве что), пока их не взяли под крыло "дружная евросемья".

What I cannpot understand - why the whole trial was in Georgian (except for speach of prosecutor) as if it was a kind of local crime, two country teenagers drunk wine and brandy and attempted to hijack a heli with a few sheep and goats and one drunk shephard on board. The plane following to Leningrad via Batumi and Kiev was supposed to visit 3 Soviet republics in total and among passengers there were not only Georgians. Offiicals from headquarters of KGB and Ministry of Civil Aviation must have presented on the trial. Was there translation into Russian? Have not noticed any headsets on anybody in the court, though. It means one thing - in 1983 Georgia was in fact a "country inside another country" and owing to Comrade Shevardnadze and other guys in 1991 there was just formalities to be done and legalize what had long been de-facto.

Качественный фильм. И, вроде, начинаешь даже проникаться долей сопереживания по отношению к угонщикам, но сцена похорон экипажа, очень сильная, все расставляет по своим местам. Рекомендую пересматривать, если есть какие-то сомнения в справедливости приговора. Терроризм, и в этом убедились за последние лет 20 - страшное зло, и не может быть оправдано никакими нравственными или религиозными постулатами. И должно быть наказано по всей строгости закона, о какой бы стране ни шла речь. Другой вопрос - мы не знаем и не узнаем, все ли приговоренные к смерти угонщики запятнали себя кровью. Скорее всего, да. Но вот приговор отцу Теймуразу жесток и даже несправедлив. Он виноват и должен был понести наказание. Но! Он не участвовал в убийствах, на борту не был, и сильно сомневаюсь, что он призывал к массовым убийствам неверующих (все же это христианский священнослужитель). Да, он подстрекатель и соучастник, но казнить его было большой ошибкой. Дуболомы, принявшие такое решение, не понимали, "как водится", как они помогли возвести, в общем то, соучастника захвата самолета в лик мучеников безбожного коммунистического режима, и не без оснований. Какой козырь они сами дали в руки врагам советской власти и в какого матерого антисоветчика и ненавистника моментально превратили совсем молоденькую девчонку - дочку батюшки. Она никогда не простит. И все свою жизнь принципиально положит на то, чтобы убеждать людей, каким г...ном был СССР и социалистический строй. И молодежь, не жившая ни минуту в советской стране, будет верить ей. Грузины все к тому же очень набожные, в этом лично убедился, когда бывал в Грузии.
