I think one thing that sets this rivalry apart from all others is the close proximity of the schools. These students and players literally shop at the same stores, go to the same movie theatres, live in the same apartment complexes and eat at the same restaurants. For better or worse, they can't get away from each other.

Why even play regular season games when using a purely subjective metric like that?

Here is how it actually rolled out. Had UGA beaten Bama, the playoff would have included the four undefeated teams. Simple, clean easy. But, the playoff was absolutely NOT going to exclude the SEC champion, no matter what. So, when Alabama beat Georgia, they were in. So, now the real decision came down to Texas or FSU. And, since Texas had beaten Alabama in the regular season, there was no way that Bama was getting in and Texas being excluded. So, both were selected. Keeping FSU out was the path of least resistance, all around. Easy to explain, "well, Jordan Travis is out, so..."
