What do you mean by weird? I am getting a sense of an undertone there that you’re not saying what you really think. It’s funny when people who “seasonally” go into nature and make hypotheses on why things are the way they are. As a hunter myself I understand elk behavior. I spend every year deep in elk territory. We make fun of people who road hunt. Apart from you not having a way to harvest an elk you are doing the same thing. The people who road hunt always say “we haven’t seen a thing” well because MOST elk aren’t near roads. I understand these areas you are in typically have high populations but there’s a good chance as social media makes these places popular you will likely put pressure on these animals which will force them out of the area. There’s also several things you clearly don’t understand about the elk rut which can easily be understood by a google search. You have 3 stages of the elk rut. Early rut, pre-rut and peak rut. Early rut is when heard bulls isolate. Smaller bulls may link up with heard of calves and cows but that’s because they just got ditched by their buddies and their instincts tell them to group up with other elk. Pre-rut is when heard bulls start showing up but doesn’t mean they typically are fighting yet. Peak rut is when they cows are hot in estrus and more fights ensue. Another thing to keep in mind is if you were there during a full moon the elk are likely resting during the day because they had all night to rut. Weather also affects feeding habits. If it’s hot they will be resting longer during the day and feeding more at night. Weather also affects where their feeding areas are. A late rain season actually means they can stay longer in high timber because Forbes are more available and provide more caloric value compared to grass. I am not talking at the tundra line. They will likely be places nowhere near a road when looking for Forbes. Deep in thick timber. Almost impossible to spot them unless you are about 50 yards away. Once they have no Forbes their next best food source is grass. From what it looks like in your videos is the type of habitat you were hoping to film them in. I’m not sure if you have an issue with hunting but I can guarantee you it’s not that. Hunting is highly regulated and scientifically managed. If there’s any blame on humans it’s lack of habitat and year round pressure. I.E. hiking, camping and other outdoor activities.

Hello, well despite your passive aggressive insults at me, there's actually some really good insights in there so I appreciate that part of your comment. I also mention at least 10 times in the video, that I don't claim to know why the action was so slow in that area. And after talking to some hunters who were also in the adjacent area (obviously you can't hunt IN Rocky Mountain National Park) who said it was also remarkably slow, yeah I can say it seemed to me to be 'weird.' Anyway, again I really appreciate the information about the rut coming from your angle as a hunter. Obviously I'm just out for some nice photos and have been going to the Grand Lake side of Rocky since I was a child. This was the first time that the action was so slow so I describe it as weird. Maybe that's not the right word. There's no mystery undertone or me not saying what I think, because again, I mention many many times that I don't know what's going on.

Have the wolves been anywhere close to this area?
@ScottHammel005
@ScottHammel005 3 күн бұрын
I thought about this as well and the answer is...sort of but not really. CPW did mention a few months ago that one wolf had entered RMNP but it was very brief and was no longer there. I also believe this is the wolf that was found dead a few weeks ago in Grand county. The Copper Creek pack that was relocated was in Grand county but not near the park. So yes, a single wolf had been in that area but for a very brief amount of time and that wolf is also now dead. So I don't think that would have any impact on the rut this year.

@@ScottHammel005 Well, as an avid hunter/outdoorsman, a Montana native and now long time resident of Washington state, founder of the Washington State Wolf Sightings page on Facebook, and a fairly lengthy history of communicating with WSDFW wolf biologists, and paying attention to the discrepancies of the state and federal game depts vs what's really happening on the ground - it is only my opinion that if they admit to knowing one wolf was in the area, there was more than one wolf in the area. The impact of having an apex predator in their environment will effect their habits immediately. The bulls only go where the cows are during the rut (you know this). My dad lived in a spot starting in 1979 in Montana, never saw elk even close to his home. Within 10 years of re-introduction of the wolves in MT he had rack bulls in his field. They will change their habits for sure. I was just trying to figure out what changed in CO this year and that's a big change, and I believe you are mostly correct on the timing of the rut. Weather doesn't play as big a factor as some people think. I think it's closer to the sun exposure/moon phase than weather. That said, I do believe that their rut is being slightly pushed back over a period of time. Just my thought .. cool vids, thank you for sharing.

We were there this past week looking and listening for elk . Driving in at 5 am were heard and seen elk in the moonlight. As soon as daylight they would quit down and move into the timber. Only after cooler temperatures did we see elk in the meadows 30 minutes before dark.

Scott, great video as always, even with the challenges. My wife and I went up this weekend before sunrise to the Grand Lake side and experienced the same, very quiet. We continued on to the east side and it was also very quiet, only saw two groups. We had a little bit more luck on the east side a few weeks ago but as you mentioned there are just so many people who insist on talking non-stop it's very difficult to get any decent footage. Hopefully next year will be a better turnout.

My wife and I drove up to the jetty on our anniversary in June and found that construction site. We did see some eagles on the beach, on the other side of the fencing, that were showing some good action. Also saw a lot more eagles in the area, but none close enough to shoot. I also didn't have my long lens with me. Yes, it always rains in Oregon, except during the summer. The winters are generally pretty gloomy, but even then it's not constant rain. Of course, the coast is also it's own little ecosystem. Glad you enjoyed your visit, despite the screaming children.

It's a massive construction project up there, whatever it is they are doing. But definitely a very nice state park, glad I was able to find something to shoot that day! Only eagle I saw was the one that flew in briefly and then flew away before I could grab a shot. I think the large bird that flew in to Cannon that sent all of the murre's off might've been a bald eagle as well but it was tough to say for 100% in the low light. But that was a spectacle haha!
