Sure there are so many things to learn from China and its struggle. India has just begun taking stride but already mired with the huge gap between the very few rich and many poor. The middle class are squeezed with high taxes and hence less to spend to keep the demands going.

The speaker is the DAUGHTER of the President of China Communist Policy Bank (Asian Infrastructure Bank). She CONVENIENTLY forgot EVER to mention this fact. You THINK had her VIEWS on China economy deviate from Commies Talking Points EVEN SLIGHTLY, her FATHER may: 1/ fall off a balcony; 2/ suddenly dies of a heart attack (JUST like the Former Prime Minister LKQ did in 2023); OR 3/ enter into a REHAB program at a (Mental) Hospital (like million of political prisoners there)? Not funny. BUT you got the point. Her views are INHERENTLY Pro-China-biased. Freedom of Speech, right? Right. Disclosure as Measure of Decency and Fairness? Absolutely.

I'm no academic but when I hear Prof Jin suggested that China econ model should somehow echo the West in terms of the contributing factor of the service factor to the shares of the overall economy, I question. For instance, China wants a healthy real estate market but does NOT want to rely on it as a major growth engine in comparison to the developed nations. Another instance, China has learned dearly from the US on the importance of self reliance if not having its own diverse bases and strong manufacturing capability....

The problem with China is the way it organizes its economy triggers unhealthy competition led by governments.
@jamesjz91821 күн бұрын
The idea is to have US and Chinese big corporations to invest into each other where technology are shared, markets are shared and people are freely working with each other and learn to understand/respect each other. That's the goal. But it appears the political elites in both countries are doing something to disengage in the fight of influencing power over others. That's the problem. We should gradually reduce the power of governments, reduce the size of the government, reduce the privileges given to government officials, but instead execute more systematically based on laws and common interests. So, it is not a fight US vs China, but instead of the new global market/capitalism model vs the traditional big government-controlled model. Removing the political elites from power is the true revolution of this century.
@jamesjz91821 күн бұрын
What we are having now is different from what we planned before we tried to integrate China into the global market. The conflict we are having today is the big-government control over capitalism and free market. The governments are historically given too much power and result into emergence of the class of political elites in each country(both in US and China, and other countries). That's where corruption, low capital efficiency and inequalities are created, human rights/freedom are not protected in these countries. The modern revolution is to have those big international corporations to replace the influence of these political elites and big governments, to engage people of different color, different religion and ethnicities to work with each other to promote understanding of each other and learn to co-exist peacefully. The big international corporations can also help promote competitive welfare packages to replace the usual function of a welfare system in certain countries where high level of corruption usually occurs. That's the idea that would result into overall peaceful and more tolerant world than today. But China's political elites took advantage of this model to acquire wealth for its political elites but later turned against this model when they see the risk of the influence of this idea of global capitalism while democracy weakens the government/elites power. They are starting manipulating with its privileges over the capitalists internal and external and threat to put its power over the entire eco-system. That's a legitimate threat when it has used the wealth it acquired to modernize its navy and military power in an attempt to become the new dominant force over the eco-system. This is why the western are fighting against and the dis-integration of China begins.

there is a study done (wish I could find it again) which shows the failure in some of his projections. It shows how converting away from fossil fuels will have a compounding affect as much of our mining and transport requirements are in support of the fossil fuel economy itself. When the consumption is reduced so it the inefficiencies of energy conversions and the energy consumption of the transport. His calculations assume no improvements in material demands or efficiency improvements in green energy generation. Just the redesign of the electrical architecture in EVs has reduced its copper needs by 50%. Cobalt has been nearly eliminated. Solar panels were converting about 12% of the suns rays to electricity, now they can reach 20-25%. Wind power improvements include the recycling of blades, new designs which are quiet and have no blades making them safer for birds, safe to put between buildings, and fewer moving parts making them last longer. The bias in his reporting showed early when he talked about machines wearing out and needing to be replaced within the conversation of us needing to continually increase the mining of materials for these new machines. No where did he account for an offset in demand by the recycling of these worn out machines.

Jin is good at puting big words together to show off her grasp of the current situation in China. However, she would stay at that level becaused of her rich-family social status in China that determined her superficial understanding about that country but not about how ordinary people live.
So much better than the typical western propaganda that keeps slamming China over the same tired issues that had been regurgitated for many years

Since I was born in the 1960s, I have observed no issues regarding minority rights in China. In fact, minorities enjoy various privileges, such as preferential policies in employment, education, and tax benefits, etc. For instance, public institutions are required to provide halal canteens as a gesture of respect for the Muslim faith.

Frankly speaking, Prof Jin,you will be better off to stay doing your economics teaching, and don't bother with this sort of public talks stuff. You may have good connections within China and know a lot of things happened there, but it seems that you are still lack of the necessity of the understanding on traditional Chinese culture to interpret them appropriately, nor you have the necessity understanding of the Western culture sufficiently to be able to clarify the misunderstandings of the people here about China and Chinese neither (as they are not a result of a naturally occurring economic phenomenon - Just think about the impact of that the US has been passing bills to spend billions over the past a few years on funding negatively reporting on China worldwide - bear in mind that saying "you cannot wake up people who intend pretending being in sleep").

she has family in China, she can't criticize the government and its actions. We all know how famous businessmen "disappear" after such criticism, only to reappear all apologetic and stepping down from their executive functions at their companies. I agree with her that China has a lot of potential, but under democratic rule, like the countries she is trying to compare China to. Under Xi, the investments in unproductive infrastructure projects and overcapacity will continue. China can have so much more innovation and progress, but only when free thought is allowed. In their current societal model, they are very limited, and their chances of further success and progress decrease every day. China was supposed to surpass the US in terms of GDP in 2027 or sooner as some predicted, but that is no longer the case. Without substantial reforms, China is on a declining trajectory and eventually they will need to go through a painful adjustment down.
