I think it was 10-12 years ago now, but I only had to hear about a DIY'er improperly replacing a gas water heater on their own and they blew up their whole house while sleeping. Killed the whole family. That's all it took for me to decide I'll always hire a trained professional to handle any appliance that connects to a gas line. This video can still help me with knowing if a professional is doing what they're supposed to.

My toilet flushes weakly and barely empties the. Would this solve my problem? Thanks.
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 5 күн бұрын
It might, make sure the water level is all the way to the top of the canister before flushing, also make sure the handle is fully operating. If both are good then yes I would change out the canister. Also if there is a clog or partial clog somewhere down the line it will cause weak flushing.

Why use mortar instead of the sealant on the shower collar and corners?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 5 күн бұрын
Great question, you can use the sealer but the sealer is super thick and has a lot of build up in those areas that make the tile stick up. You would need it under and over each piece. Also the sealer is very expensive “25 a tube, contractors cost” where the mortar is relatively cheep and quick once mixed. The sealer is waterproof but the membrane itself is already waterproof.

In SW Ohio, (I don't know the rest of the country) shooting a screw into a product like B vent will fail an inspection 100% of the time. I assume based on the manufacturers and UL listing, I'd be STUNNED if screws are allowed. The manufacturer's trump local codes, and inspectors will defer to manufacturers. Also, B Vent will not be high temp. Because its dual wall, it won't burn your hands. Also, B Vent, like flexible gas line hardware is brand specific. B vent can also not be trimmed. A telescoping piece must be used for distance. On a PVC flue, it's not condensate. It's products of combustion. It's not like AC condensate.

Correction. Code does not allow single wall through any roof. Single wall pipe is run to a chimney where it is vented. If the chimney is clay tile lined, some inspectors will allow the pipe to enter the chimney. Because flue gases eat away mortar (something we've belatedly learned) the chimney must have a flue liner if its brick/mortar. B vent can run through a roof with a roof flashing, storm collar, and storm cap.
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 9 күн бұрын
Great information, the only single walled piping I would run through a roof would be exhaust fans , anything with heat like HVAC or hot water I use b vent, double walled. I passed inspection because the screws were very short and did not penetrate the inner pipe. But you are correct some places don’t allow screws at all. And you are also correct on the pipe being not hot. But the inspector wanted a half inch clearance from all combustible material. Thank you for watching and the awesome feedback

This makes sense. My case,I flush the handle down, drum raises and immediatly drum drops, leaves half the water in the tank, and toilet doesn't flush. I have to hold down handle till tank completely empties, and then it will flush. Replace drum?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 9 күн бұрын
I have had several do that and yes that’s a good option but first make sure the water level is set to the very top of the canister. Also I have seen damaged handles/rods that case poor flushing. Those are simple checks first and then try a new canister. Lastly fill valve can also case weird flush if they are clogging from hard water.

I’ve only ever known toilet tank assemblies to have a flapper…so when my water level recently started dropping causing the toilet to intermittently refill, I figured it was probably time to replace the flapper. Much to my surprise when I removed the lid of the tank and found a canister assembly I was like what the heck is this…I literally had no idea what to even look up to try and figure out how to fix it cuz I didn’t know what it was called 😂. No thanks in part to my nosy spy phone, I was looking up a video on KZbin one day, completely unrelated to this topic, and lo and behold, your video randomly popped up! Thank God it did, because in that moment I learned this was called a canister assembly!! I will echo the same comments that so many others already have by saying, this video was incredibly educational, easy to follow and most importantly, beyond helpful! I just finished replacing the yellow gasket to start; will see if that does the trick. If not, I’ll move onto investigating your other suggestions regarding the fill valve and/or the canister replacement. Thank you so so much for putting this video out there and taking the time to so thoroughly explain the inner workings of this assembly. While it isn’t a rocket science assembly, just gaining the knowledge and understanding of all parts and components, how they all function and what their jobs are, is invaluable information for those of us who aren’t plumbers! Don’t get me wrong, there are times when you have to call a plumber, but then there are times like this, when you can find the solution as well as alternative troubleshooting options/ solutions from awesome videos like yours!! For reference, I have a Kohler 5380-CS5-AA tank. Many thanks again for this video!!

@UltimateDiyer You’re very welcome! Yes, it absolutely helped and appears that was the issue after all!! Woo-hoo!! The original flush valve seal had a small tear in it, so I’m assuming that was causing the leak issue. I purchased the replacement seal at HD, and I wanted to note, when I went to put the original seal in the packaging of the new seal, it didn’t fit. The original seal was slightly larger than the replacement. I found that a bit odd, but like I said, it seems to be doing the trick thus far!! Thanks again for the awesome video!!

I saw another video that showed how to install the flush valve but, when I actually got my product delivered (I ordered it online from Home Depot), it had a different base than the one in the video. And, when I read the directions on my replacement product, they would have had me removing the tank to install a new base for the flush valve. So, I searched for that original video to watch it again and your video also came up in the list. Your title, "How To Fix a Kohler Canister Flush Valve In 60 Seconds" caught my eye. Thank God I watched it and realized that I didn't even need the new base. I kept the old base and just switched out the top. This may be the BEST video I ever watched on KZbin. Thank you!

I am using flat river rock on the top of an accent table. I want the colors to come out as if the stone is wet but I don’t want it to be glossy. What products do I use? Do I need to use 511 and also a sealer afterwards?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 13 күн бұрын
What I like to do is use the 511 to just seal before I grout, and then I use a gloss/sealer when I'm done. That way, even the grout has sealer on it, even if it is built into the grout, and it gives everything a shine. Stonetech semi-gloss finish & sealer will have much less gloss. I hope this helps. I see you do not understand where the water goes. The water that goes inside the canister is to refill the bowl. It does not fill up the inside of the canister for a flush…..did you even watch your toilet fill? Its a canister like that because the top of the opening is bigger than the opening going thru to the toilet which created a faster rush of water with a natural waterfall effect. The inside of the canister does not and cannot ever fill-up. Definitely need to understand how it works in order to help people fix it. Also. This part is replaceable. It’s called a Koehler flush piston repair kit. . Comes with just the inner pole and top yellow piece. When people give poor advice on a platform such as this….it creates a whole group of people believing the same incorrect information The proper part for anyone who has not already been misinformed by this video is shared with a link below a.co/d/g0GUOzb

Great video, thank you! My Kohler Cimarron is about nine years old and I can hear it fill intermittently on its own. I remove the lid periodically and the water level in the tank is below the water line on the side of the tank. I got a replacement (the yellow one) gasket and asked a plumber to replace it when he was here for something else. He said it wasn't needed and did something quickly that stopped the filling. Now, about three years later, it's intermittently filling again. I don't know what he did. I do not hear water running, so the leakage is very slight. Is there an adjustment of some sort that he did? It was very quick. Thank you.

@@user-iv5lo8qx4i it sounds like it is the water level, look at the canister not the side of the tank. The water may be just a bit too high and it is going over the top part of the canister. since you’ve had this problem before and he made a quick adjustment that is where I would look first also, there is a gasket at the bottom of the canister that could be starting to leak. but I would start by looking at the water level at the canister, not the side of the tank. My problem with this toilet is that the canister gets stuck at the top and runs water all night until someone notices running water. Do I need to adjust the chain's length?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 26 күн бұрын
Sometimes that’s the answer, or sometimes the canister needs to be replaced. I always start with the simplest solution and work outward making sure things like the handle are not bent etc. I’ve seen the actual flush handle be broken because of aggressive teenagers or just plain wear. I’ve also found canisters that just hang up and don’t glide correctly that I just replaced and things went back to normal. I would unhook the chain and work the handle and see if it has a hang spot where it likes to stick, if not I would make sure water levels are correct etc. then change the canister. Let me know what you find.

Why do I have to hold the handle down to allow the water into the bowl? The canister does not float long enough to let water into the bowl.
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 27 күн бұрын
Could be many reasons that happens all the way from partial clogs did not have the water level adjusted correctly and even a canister that is starting to malfunction. Even your fill valve could not be putting out enough water because of a clog. First thing I would do is check and make sure the water level is all the way to the top and make sure that your handle is not bent, and that it opens up the canister fully then start looking at the other possibilities.
