Hey, Man, great Pen! Thanks for the video!! I hope to be fully kit less one day lol. However, I did notice that your finishing process is fairly tedious! Mine is also but purely out of a spirit of exchange of expertise, I am curious if you have tried the wet sanding pads that go up to around 16,000 grit? I use them on all my pens and with a good sanding technique, the only polishing I do at the end is a single application of Meguiars Ultimate Car compound. It works wonders on acrylic and reliable gives you a glass finish every time. Not to mention that the pads last forever (As long as you dont sand metal or raw wood lol) and a big bottle of meguiars is only $11, it is a very inexpensive method and outshines every other technique I have tried including the graded compounds and paper applications. Regardless though, everything about your video was a pleasant experience! Great Job Sir!!!

Thank you! I have the micro mesh pads and that goes to a very high grit. The way we do it now is buying large sheets of wet/dry sand paper and cut it to size. You are not wrong about it being tedious though. Acrylic is a harder material than most resins including the one we use, Alumilite, so it has some pros and cons as does everything. Thanks for the input. Have a good day, Jon

Hello 👋🏾 I wanted to get my own mini metal lather to start tuning pens and I was wondering what will be your recommendation should I get one of those Vevor lathe or you have any good one that will help
@maverickworkshop

I have a long answer for this question but I would think about budget, space, and capability. If you don’t have a wood lathe I would consider how to solve the sanding and polishing part. Other than that I would make sure there is enough workspace between centers. I can really go on a while on this but those are some things I’d consider. Mine is a lathe from LMS. Jon

Thanks so much for illuminating the process..I have done kit pens, and seen folks use taps manually on a wood lathe. The metal lathe is next level and critical for consistency and repeatability....if you do another talking about the metal lathe and tools for threading, tenon cutting would be of great interest...Awesome video thanks for showing your process...live long and prosper..

But I wasn’t trying to explain exactly what it was that I was doing…instead I was just sharing my process and the way that I do it. I have been doin live streams and I’ve really been enjoying it. So I will most likely continue doing them. I will try to be better about giving some more lead time before going live again. -Jon

i have been interested in custom flashlights etc, and beads as well. do you think a simple "harbor freight" lathe would do to begin with beads? i do know tooling for different metals is tough and costly, however it seems to begin this way may be the step

Custom flashlights sounds pretty neat!!**short answer: yes you can make beads with a HF lathe. **Longer answer: if you are talking about the HF metal lathe it may work for your purpose but the workspace (between centers) is really small. If you were talking about the wood lathe… I had the HF wood lathe and a Jet at the same time and there was a significant difference in the fit and finish of everything. -Jon

Turning is a mess, it also can make a significant amount of dust. From wood chips to swarf (resin noodles) and sanding (dust) it can be messy and even harmful if you are not wearing appropriate equipment. On the plus side it sweeps and vacuums really easily off of hard surfaces (not carpet). Hope that helps! -Jon

Glad you found it, there might be an upcoming video just for sanding. On pretty much all plastics I use a total of 8 grits for wet sanding from 240-2500. When it comes to wood or hybrid the process is a bit different. The polishing paste is called magic juice and it is a 6 step. -Jon

A suggestion on the barrel trimming. Get yourself a vise and secure the blank in the vise. It makes it both easier AND safer. I'm going to have to check whether I have an M3 blank, if not I'll pick some up next time I order some Liberty or Coyote Clicks from McKenzie. (Good vendor, fantastic blanks.)

Is Alumilite resin different to epoxy resin, or is Aluminite just a brand of epoxy resin?
@maverickworkshop
@maverickworkshop 6 ай бұрын
Alumilite is a brand, the Clear Slow might be the most commonly used for pen blank makers and preferred by turners. Because of the set up time of the resin and ease of turning. It also has the hardness when finishing which helps avoid scratches. -Jon
