it depends on what relationship dynamic you're looking for. remember that marriage is a business model, and the first date is essentially an interview for chemistry... which needs to come after checking their cv. you need to know if you are both looking for the same type of relationship or not beforehand. there's so many different arrangements, and it all depends on if you want children or not, and how you think they should be raised. unhappy relationships usually stem from unrealistic expectations combined with immaturity. If you want a 50/50 relationship, so 2 working parents + equal childcare + shared housework between you both - then no matter who ate what, each pays half of the total on the date. In the relationship, they would pay an equal PERCENTAGE of their earnings into their joint account to cover the household costs, and any extra income is their own. but if you're looking to arrange a different dynamic, working dad + stay at home mom type of thing - then obviously, from the very first date, there will be the expectation of showing you are both comfortable with this set-up, with one person paying for everything, including transporting them to and back home from the date. There will be more pressure on the earning parent, as how many children the couple should reasonably have is directly linked to their income and savings. and if the stay at home parent does earn anything on the side, that does not go into the family expenses - that's their money, for emergencies, or even just self-care. lastly, if you both want to keep 100% independence, then ask for 2 separate bills and pay for what you ate/ drank + it's tax, and that's it. If you don't want to share finances, don't want to share a house, don't need someone to routinely clean up after you or cook for you (any domestic labour), arrange your doctors/ dentists appointments for you, get your uniform ready in the morning, none of that - then be upfront. obviously stay over at each other's, and cook for each other sometimes if it's a romantic night or a special event, but otherwise you both look after yourselves. There are too many folks who want to mix up different dynamics and then wonder why their relationships keep failing or even backfiring.

If they ask for 50% maybe the whole relationship will be based on fairness.
