That low C in the first study is so damn satisfying and powerful

Certainly stunning from a technical point of view. But I can't see any artistic value in this.

I like this very much. They are not really compositions but short soundscapes before that word existed. Very picturesque: you see the bear and the black woman whistling a blues tune !

I love how free the rhythm in the Nocturne is and then near the end suddenly a 6tuplet in one hand, equivalent triplet in the other but with a nested quintuplet flourish and a precise metronome marking of 66

I almost have all Cherkassky's CD's, but on none of them this Kaleidoscope was recorded. Not on Decca, nor on Nimbus. But on Februari 1988, I recorded this piece from an LP borrowed from a Lybrary on Cassette tape. So now I am happy to have both the score and the recording.😊

Fascinating. All the classic Bartok Idioms and harmonic devices are there. Only a genius could make something so discordant and complex so fascinating, engaging and simply listenable.

This piece is so powerful, and so brilliantly crafted, and full of arresting melodic ideas. The fact that this serious music was written when Copland was only 22 is amazing. One of the all-time great short works for piano.

For those of you, who can't get rid of the feeling you know the main theme in the 3rd movement: after few hours of having it in my head, I recognized a mix of Bloch's Fugue from the Concerto Grosso and Shostakovich's own 4th movement of the Cello sonata. No idea if he had it in his mind, but I am satisfied. :)

My favorite version among the many ones here ... Not too slow, very moving. And most of all, the minimum required of rubato. This is insane how much rubato some great pianists feel obliged to put in this so beautiful piece of music. The music is absolutely wonderful and moving by itself: no need to add any "romantic" exaggeration !!!
