Santa Claus went in to win the Irish Derby ridden by another Australian jockey Bill Pyers , apparently the owner thought Scobie Breasley , noted for his strong late finishes , gave him too much to do , although he won .

Hi Eugene , many thanks for your comment. Santa Claus was actually ridden by my uncle Willie Burke in the Irish Derby after Epsom. Bill Pyers rode Sunseeker who finished 3rd in the Irish Derby that year @ 66/1. You are indeed correct to say that Scobie Breasley gave him too much to do even though he won. Scobie was paid his fee and never rode Santa Claus again. Willie Burke gave Santa Claus a no nonsense ride in the Irish Derby and won by an imperious 4 lengths.

Prince Royal II was the second son of Ribot to win the Arc, after Molvedo in 1961. I was at San Siro racecourse in Milan when he won the Gran Premio di Milano in the same1964.

The way horses are managed today, Santa Claus would have been withdrawn, but things were very different 50 years ago and in those days there was no Juddmonte or Irish Champion as an alternative. On ground more suited to him, he came a very creditable 2nd. in the Arc. Not quite a great horse, but an exceedingly good one.

Was a very good horse ridden by a good jockey. Nice win and the Claus snatches the prize going away by 4+lengths. I remember it well, the 60’s had great jockeys and great horses. Not the best horse if the 60’s but i honestly think he would have made Frankel sweat and might have beaten him. I know its hard to judge eras but he had electric pace and didn’t give in easily

I remember the old claus- pretty decent horse on his day but alas not one of the greats.

Should have stuck with Scobie. Jocked off for winning the Derby.

Many thanks for your comment 1950 Mr Universe. There was huge debate back then in 1964 about the merits of both jockeys. In my opinion , Scobie Breasley left his lucky 1 length " heart in the mouth " win , which could have gone horribly wrong , way too late much to the disdain of trainer Mickey Rogers. Hence Scobie Breasley was paid his fee but never rode Santa Claus again. Says it all really. Willie Burke gave a more assured , confident and no nonsense ride to win the Irish Derby at the Curragh by an imperious 4 lengths. Opinion depends on which side of the fence you're on. 👍

Nasram II was only three seconds off the course record that day. A combination of the hard Ascot ground and the small field was the ultimate undoing of Santa Claus a horse whose best performances were all on yielding ground.

Willie that day became the first irish jockey to win the Irish Derby since it's new format in 1962. Roger Poincelet on Tambourine in 1962 ( French ) and Garnie Bougoure on Ragusa in 1963 ( Australian ) were the two previous winning jockeys in a golden era of international jockeys.

Many thanks for your comment Ducsdream. Santa Claus has the ignominy of being the shortest priced favourite ever at 2/13 to lose a King George. According to Willie , he was concerned about the firm going before the race and Santa Claus ultimately proved reluctant to let himself down on the firm going at Ascot that day. Probably explains his lack of desire to pass the filly. Combined with the short tight run in at Ascot it played into the winners hands albeit a worthy winner on the day. That s horse racing for you. Horses are not machines.

Apparently Santa Claus was very reluctant to pass the filly and had to be strongly handled to go past although only cantering at the time...
