Marilyn outshone Sir Laurence in that film, she's the only reason I watch it.

A fact known to all at this awards ceremony, for his celebrated motion picture production of 'Hamlet' (1948), Olivier cast a very young Ms. Simmons as Ophelia, for which she was awarded an Oscar in 1949. So their warm embrace and his kind words to her.

Me and my mate used to howl with laughter at that 'I've got a tail' song. It just sounded like some weirdo bragging about his penis.
@YouCantEscapeTheBlob Жыл бұрын
Haha, yep, I always thought that. The song does make Nutkin's tail seem very... phallic. Which has some pretty... interesting implications when you consider what happens to the tail at the end.

That was a lovely endorsement by Tennessee Williams. A poke in the eye to Elia Kazan and Karl Malden who never shut up in saying that Jessica Tandy was better as Blanche.

They left a lot out of the film , on the homosexuality elements , seeing as was illegal until labour 68 … loved the film .. the class system in it’s all irritating gloriously , a closed shop open to the upper classes , MM was from ahead of her time look up about her friendship with Ella fritzgerald . I don’t support MM lateness …

Very interesting. I am a huge Olivier fan and have watched his comments on this drama. I am not very interested in Monroe's films but not because of any personal dislike, rather a lack of interest in light comedy. The basic problem was probably Olivier who has to take responsibility for ever agreeing to do this movie in the first place! The piece itself was very average, he should not have been the director and as the commentator observes wisely Olivier was a better director of men than women. He had contempt for the Method school of acting and a man of his stature should have walked off the project when he knew it was going so badly. His interview about this production is very telling. He does not think Monroe was an actress but really a model who just loved attention and reacted to it. He does not think of her as a good actress. I respect him so much that I cannot contradict him and I can only imagine his utter horror at finding himself in such a situation that he had probably never encountered before. He did not tolerate unprofessionalism and Monroe was many things but I would not include professional. She was habitually incredibly late, would forget her lines and seemingly didn't care that much. Olivier was a giant of professionalism and had every right to expect the highest standards. But this was a totally ill fitting match and Olivier should have not compromised himself and should have quit as actors and directors do when faced with these types of conflicts. Dame Sybil I think understood all this and realised Olivier was just not suited to this production as actor and director and made things worse because he knew no other way than to demand of Monroe that which was impossible for her. I sympathize more with him than her in this respect but his response should have been to quit and let another director take his place. There was no virtue in continuing. She was marvellous at what she brought to the camera as he was but their methods were utterly at variance and the chasm was so great that nothing could have bridged the gap. I think he understood the problem very clearly but chose the wrong course by continuing and should have known better. His professional reputation would have been enhanced and not diminished. Yes he would have probably been sued and lost money but his reputation would have survived regardless. What a sad mess! By the way his relationship with his ex wife has precisely zero to do with any of this.

Allegedly “ he treated VL appallingly & contributed to her mental health deterioration , I don’t agree MM should of been so late , yet she was obviously abused as a child & saw Paula & Lee as parents which ( allegedly) exploited £2000 in the ‘50’s ..
