Of all the dumb penalties and fines by NASCAR, this takes 1st place. While the 25pts seem insignificant in the final numbers, it hurt their momentum and rhythm by being a distraction. It not only cost JR, but the near sightedness by NASCAR cost the sport. Can you imagine the money, interest, and publicity if JR would have stayed hot and won just that championship? Give all that up because NASCAR didn't want to pay an FCC fine? Because you wanted show no one was above the NASCAR office? Bad business decision.

For those curious why the penalty nascar levied on him was harsh. FCC was clamping down on EVERYTHING live television related after the Janet Jackson SuperBowl incident for a period of time. You can't really blame NASCAR for this as the FCC jumped them hard for this interview and had to appease them. It fucking sucks but nascar wasn't fully to blame here

Tony was such an A hole. He runs into everything and blames every one else. Then he murders a guy. Douche. You don’t also insult a legend.

Tony had serious emotional issues, he need help not be praised for driving talent. In the 80s, they would have wooped him into shape.

And one of DWs wins was a Daytona 500, which Stewart never won. Tony should have quit while he was behind.

100% agree with Smoke. NASCAR sold its soul for TV money. Fox was about making back that money. It became a TV show. Many's the time I watched with the volume down and MRN on the radio

NASCAR screwed him out of the championship that year by crying over him saying a simple curse word when he was merely saying it in celebration at the fact he won and wanted to be like his dad. Dale Sr would’ve easily gotten away with that had he cursed. Or any other driver. NASCAR really pulled a bonehead move on him. Don’t get me wrong it’s just 25 points but that easily could’ve been a major factor in him getting the championship and who knows maybe reality would’ve been different and he would’ve never wrecked at Atlanta. So many what ifs. If only we knew.

This year Jimmie could have snuck out the Championship in 2004. Kurt had a tire fall off on the track right in front of pit road. Got pretty lucky. Lost by 8 pts. Definitely needs to be in the top 20 of all time races. I was a late bloomer for NASCAR and started and picked Jimmie Johnson only because I like Lowes over Home Depot. Had no clue who he was. Was glad I chose the way I did!
