One of the best things about the Vinyl Tag is discovering new channels like this. Your voice sounds like the radio guy from my very small Australian town in the 80s. Great selections and The Church are hard to argue with although I think the Go-Betweens best still outshine the Church's best. You had me going back to look at clips of the Serious Young Insects as I do remember them from back in the day, I need to hunt down their stuff. Look forward to more of your content

Giday Brian. You did a fantastic tag video👍Plenty of goodness on display here, and Aussie artists feature highly, I'm a first time viewer, but I am going to smash that sub button.😀Raw Sienna joins the list of bands/titles named after art colors (Richard Clapton's 'Prussian Blue' and the Oz band Madder Lake come to mind) You are right about Robert Fithen - he is often away on a tangent, but a very entertaining bloke - we should make him an honorary Aussie 🦘Cheers from Melbourne. G'day Brian, new subscriber & fellow Aussie youtuber, finding your channel by chance. Interesting choices. I will be working on my version of the vinyl tag 2025 soon. Just a minor correction if I may. The Aztecs' concert at the Sydney Opera House was actually inside that venue not outdoors. They were the first rock group to grace the Opera House stage beating, by a couple of months, Sherbet & Skyhooks, who played there in September 1973. This was a concert I attended and it was also the Sydney debut of the 'Hooks who'd just issued their debut LP. Love the Mushroom label, particularly its first design. Yeah I totally agree with you on your choice of Robert Fithen. Very entertaining guy. Cheers mate 😊👍

Thanks for this! Felt like I was 'almost with you'... Good to see that the band are 'not in the business of surrender'... Decades and decades of ploughing their own glinting furrow in fertile ground. I don't care if they are a little niche, or even if that 'covert stuff was teasing', I feel as though I'm a 33rd degree member of some musical freemasonry and am brazen concerning my exclusivity. How do you rate SK's collaborations with Martin Kennedy? And, as for 'Sydney Rococo', well I'm still reeling (but not in the years) over: Jason and Wanda/Outside in a Honda... Ouch!
@TheInstituteofPop15 күн бұрын
@@jamesr6569Sorry, missed this one. I'm a huge fan of Kilbey/Kennedy, especially (off the top of my head) Glow and Fade, and You Are Everything. And, in regard to SK's memorable lyrics, sometimes one needs to 'strike while the irony is hot'! Cheers! 🙏
@jamesr656915 күн бұрын
@@TheInstituteofPop I think the MK/SK collaborations are rather fine too. When people are pleasurably wobbly around me I will sonically cosh them with 'The law of the jungle.' As for earlier collabs, as much as I like Grant Mcllenan's output, I don't think 'Jack Frost' works terribly well. Or 'Gilt trip'; they're both a little brittle in my opinion. Solo wise, 'The slow crack' works, and is definitely part of the essential canon, but I feel he is possibly all the better for bouncing ideas off others. I think I possess nearly all the stuff apart from the 'Shriek' soundtrack (do you recommend it?) and I seem to remember reading a very negative review of something he put out a long time ago called 'Dabbling'?. I only do physical music (round music), don't do compressed crappy streaming, so if I don't own it, it may as well not exist. Viva vinyl!!
@TheInstituteofPop15 күн бұрын
@ I’ve not tried too hard with ‘Shriek’ as it doesn’t do much for me. I agree with you about Jack Frost. I like the second album more, but it wasn’t released on vinyl. Remindlessness is my fave of his solo albums on record - a challenging, listen but a rewarding one. I really wish that Narcosis (my absolute favourite) would be released on vinyl… stunning. Have you heard Hex with Donnette Thayer? It’s available as a ‘fuzzy warble’ at a reasonable price and it’s quite chilling and beautiful at the same time.
@jamesr656914 күн бұрын
@@TheInstituteofPop I will give my cd copy of 'Hex' another spin. Don't come across many (if any) admirers over here on 'poverty rock'. My daughter loves the band but there are two names my wife will not allow me to utter: Robyn Hitchcock and Steven Kilbey, talents I admit to being something in awe of. Twenty years ago I randomly encountered a guy in west London wearing a 'Forget Yourself' T shirt. I struck up a conversation which proved very fruitful. Turned out he ran an online/mail business called 'Heyday' and had interesting links to the band. I was able to get my hands on stuff like 'Jammed' (hmm...) and 'Back with two beasts' (marvellous), to name just two. I actually only very recently discovered that my 'Block' splice cd single contains something I had not heard before, plus a slightly alternative take of the title track. I have Narcosis+; it's smack-smeared and dark. I can deceitfully slip 'Midnight in America (?) past my wife and not tell her who it is which is (I suppose) a minor triumph.
@TheInstituteofPop14 күн бұрын

Great list, nice to see sad lovers (although you seem to want to call them strange lovers and giants 😂) I’d add a few more that have a feel for timeframe same but some slip a little after 1985: durrutti column “lc” , lowlife “diminuendo” 1986-87), for against “December” (1987-88) chameleons “what does anything mean basically”, the cure “seventeen seconds”, modern english “after the snow” dead can dance “spleen and ideal” fields of the Nephilim “the Nephilim” (this was a tad after 1985 in 1988) breathless “ three times and waving (1987)”……..and since you did both teardrop and cope- you have to give a nod to new order “power corruption and lies”.
