Not one of my favourite Quo albums but not necessarily one of their worst. It's very definitely "of its time" - the promotion & artwork with the pointy-headstock Charvel guitars on the front cover, the very 80's production, the emphasis on polished AOR/soft-rock (with lots of synths & drum machines) and quite a lot of input (some would say too much) from outside songwriters. Burning Bridges is a bit of a marmite, love-it-or-hate it type of song, but it was a massive hit for Quo and remains a live favourite (back in the days of standing at gigs, I even once saw it trigger a bout of crowd-surfing when it appeared during an encore 🤣🤣🤣 ) Having said that, there are positives and enjoyable aspects to it. The title track is quite good (despite the production having not aged well.) There are some flashes of the older, hard-rock stylings (particularly later on in the album.) Cream of the Crop is quite good (and it featured in the live set during the accompanying tour.) Magic is a good track as well (it was used as the B-side to the re-released version of RAOTW.) As a player myself, I also have to tip my hat to Pip Williams and his guitar work on this album (he played quite a lot of additional guitar on Quo albums from the 70's through to the late 80's.) A number of the solos & additional lead parts on the AC album are recognisably him (as opposed to Rossi) he has a very distinctive lead guitar style and he's on great form here.

@VantagePointrocks you're welcome mate. I think maybe I didn't word it correctly. All around my hat is my favourite song, from the bunch of songs that Quo ending up covering. So by that I mean I really did like the original Steely Span version, long time before Quo covered it. To put it another way its not my favourite on the Don't stop album, but my favourite song from the bunch of songs that Quo covered and put on Don't stop. My close second would be When you walk in the room, but I prefer the Paul Carrack version of that.

The Quo-period from '94 up to '98 was bland, music-wise. But some songs were really awful, this one being a prime example of those. I sometime wonder, what audience they were trying to reach, as such stuff p*sses on the fanbase they had.
@VantagePointrocks14 күн бұрын
Yeah I never understood the Rossi argument that they had to branch out with their music and broaden their fanbase in order to survive. To me it seemed to have the opposite effect by alienating the dedicated fanbase they had.

@@VantagePointrocks I'm wondering did it something to do with trying to gain friendly radio style songs. It was around the time Radio 1 started to stop playing Quo. @VantagePointrocksАй бұрын
Sorry, don't agree with that at all. They had changed their sound many times previous to this album. Ain't Complaining is a total late 80s AOR album full of lush keyboards, as far away from the traditional Quo as you can get. But I still listen to it regularly is it contains good songs, even though in a different style. Thirsty Work on the other hand, in my opinion, isn't poor because they have changed their sound or riff, but the fact that the songs aren't any good.

I agree. Quo make it a more engaging and lively listen but it's basically a rather dull song to start off with. I think that I have read or heard somewhere that Quo knew Robert Palmer back in his Vinegar Joe days through touring so the fondness for the guy may have influenced the choice more than they admit when they're trying to big it up as a "real turn on". To such a tight band as Quo, this sort of "almost hypnotic" thing could be done in their sleep. As for the Bryan Ferry version, he sounds as though he is about to croak it. (Thankfully, he was alive and singing well during the recent Roxy Music tour!)
