Heads up for anyone using this video. Please get the Deere seal or equivalent. It is a double lip seal. The single lip seal do not last. It it shows the option for either one, get the better seal. I don't know how many I have changed because of this.

I see that you were using the vintage 1971. 1/2" Craftsman ratchet. That is when Sears sold a quality ratchet.

Thanks for the video. I followed it and repaired my 4440. Only trick was getting the snap ring off the quil to get the bearing out. And yes, it was about 10 gallons of oil that came out. Leak free now.

The spring washer is the same as the thrust washer on the face of the 540 gear.

@mom2threebabes Yes we are still removing the drip tape manually in the fall, but since the plastic has begun to break down by fall, pulling up the drip tape isn't hindered by the biotelo. The only problem that we have is that like any tape, plants can grow around the tape and give you a workout getting through the plant roots.

Still manually removing drip tape before fall till? Do you find this quciker and easier with the biotelo vs just pulling plastic and drip tape at the same time?

An electromagnetic drill press is not required for drilling the holes. We used one so that we could ensure the holes were as strait as possible - a hand drill would have worked as well.

The reason for the #10 screw in the top hole is that the top hole will not exit the baler from the inside. It will be behind another piece of steel, so the #10 screw is used.

The biodegradable plastic has worked well and once disked-in in the fall, it's gone by spring. Unlike standard heavier mil plasticulture plastic, the corn based plastic is thin and begins to break down in a couple of months with holes beginning to start here and there, but we've found that the plants are well established by the time the holes begin and the plants now out competed any weeds. It's more expensive but I do highly recommend it.
