Some good games on that console. I've often found though that the VCS games are smoother and often more playable. Likely to do with the architecture? I read something about that and why it led to such perfect, smooth scrolling on so many games.
@retroreplaysvault6 күн бұрын
That’s a great observation! The simpler hardware of the VCS likely helped in delivering smoother gameplay and scrolling. It’s fascinating how different architectures impact game performance!
@Hologhoul6 күн бұрын
@@retroreplaysvault It is indeed! I think what I read was that the architecture kind of forced programmers to code in a way that created smooth scrolling, I might try to find the piece again. Of course, not every game managed it. The Vanguard port used block scrolling, still a nice game though (great colours!)

I have a soft spot for these kinds of post-Atari 2600 pre-NES consoles. They were more advanced than 2600 but not enough of a leap forward to catch on like NES did, and none of them survived past 1984. They’re a capsule of a very specific time when the whole industry was up in the air

Looking back on model 2 and model 3 to some extent, there's a definite lack of flair in how the graphics are rendered. There are no transparency effects, and even on model 3 everything still has a kind of "flat" sense to it despite the textures trying to give an impression of depth and complexity. I guess there's a reason they made so many racing games 🙂 At the time i couldn't believe the fidelity of what I was seeing, but now I see more of the shortcuts and the limitations, I guess. The xbox has this look too it as well i think. It's like the last evolution of this style of graphics before we discovered other mapping techniques.
@retroreplaysvault14 күн бұрын
It's interesting how those early systems pushed the limits of the technology at the time. The evolution from flat, textured graphics to more complex techniques really highlights the progress we've made in gaming visuals.
@darren845314 күн бұрын
@@retroreplaysvault yeah I remember the hardware being the limit of what you could *do* - for instance quake was so demanding because it was no longer a "corridor" shooter, doom took massive shortcuts in level design to simplify all the calculations. Even in an arcade setting, it seems like there was still a raw limit in how many polygons and textures you could throw at the screen.
