I have the R18, it is a great engine, one of the best in its class for performance, reliability, economy and fun, none of the european or japanese, korean competitors in same class come close to it. Great fun to dive tor ing it our at high revs, lovely noise too with intake mod. Basically a great everyday ddaily driver engine.

What about mild upgrades and output of 160 HP? Still a commuter car but a little more zip? My VTEC is broken but never went to limp mode, just a little more power and less MPG unless I baby it, then over 40 on the commute.

Hi i have this engine it makes a grinding noise on cold startup people have told me its the vct Actuator. I am pretty sure this engine does not have one its only on the double overhead cam engines found in the si models. I am leaning towards the starter motor any thoughts in the comments would be apricated.

If the I-Vtec system is slightly better than the V-Tec ones, why do we still come across the V-Tech ones?
@carpartsandexhaustfarts
@carpartsandexhaustfarts 4 ай бұрын
Which Hondas post the early 2000s have you encountered with standard VTEC? That's not supposed to be a gotcha question I'm just curious. There are still engines produced that make use of I-VTEC, both the economy and performance variants. As far as I know, the variant of the K20 in the current Type R has I-VTEC on the just the exhaust side, and there might be some other VVT on some other engines like the J series in its remaining applications, but I don't think the older version of VTEC is still around in any capacity. If you mean why do we still come across older VTEC platforms in the aftermarket/used market, it's because these engines are often older, proven, and well understood with considerable support. The K20 with its I-VTEC and other advantages might have a higher ceiling than the B series engines, but the B series has over a decade of development lead time on the K series. Also, as long as B series are obtainable, people will buy them. They're great for what they are.
@JonathanAcierto
@JonathanAcierto 4 ай бұрын
Thanks, this is the same version of i-VTEC that was on my old Honda Element. Sure, it's not the performance version, but you can definitely feel a little bit of a power bump when i-VTEC switches from 12 valve to 16 valve mode. And if you know when the change over is, you can increase your fuel economy by keeping the RPM's below that changeover point. And I totally agree, if you want the performance version of i-VTEC, just buy a vehicle with it built in. You'll get a MUCH more reliable vehicle and it'll be a fun drive. I finally got my hands on a K24 Acura TSX this year and it's a blast.

Where did you get your tires/axel/sprocket? Looking to do something similar and I love what you guys did
@carpartsandexhaustfarts

I'm so glad to hear you loved our project, thank you for stopping by. I would not take the route we went, it was one of our biggest mistakes during this build. There are several prebuilt go-kart rear end kits online, I would go with something of that nature. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any specific one since I've never purchased one. The axel we used was just some steel bar from Big R (if I remember correctly). The sprocket was a cheap Ebay purchase. The wheels were dolly/hand truck wheels from Big R. DO NOT BUY DOLLY WHEELS FOR YOUR GO-KART! Neither the hubs nor the tire compounds were designed to handle the force we were exerting on them. I think we had a wheel failure roughly every 20 mins of runtime (even after reinforcing hubs with welding), and that cost accumulated quickly. We could have saved a ton of time and money in the long run if we had purchased a proper rear end setup. Not to mention our axel eventually warped causing some weird rear end characteristics. For our metal body go-kart project which we still haven't posted about for various reasons, we used the rear end and front wheels/tires from a quarter midget. Quarter midget axels, sprockets, wheels/tires gave us so much more flexibility in how we fine tuned the gearing (because we could switch out the sprocket) and it has more grip than it has any right to have (way more grip than power even with the built motor we have in it). You can get those parts from some specialist race shops and I definitely recommend going that route if you want a more comprehensive solution. At the end of the day whatever fits in the budget works, but do not buy dolly wheels. Get something that's actually designed to be powered by a motor. I hope this is helpful. I'll talk to Nick, lead engineer of the Scuffmobile, and make sure I got those details right. Cheers.

LET ME SAY THIS...... I've been building Honda since the early 2000s...... I have built b-series d-series h-series j series and k-series.... BUT WHAT SHOCKED ME ABOUT THE R18 WAS...... My mom bought a 2012 Honda Civic EX-L sedan with the r18 Z1 she used to own a 99 Civic SI with a b16 in it and use the street race back in the day when I was a kid before I was old enough to get my license and followed suit with building Hondas myself.... I put on her 2012 Civic EXL I decided to do a short ram intake BUT UNLIKE EVERYBODY ELSE WHO DOES IT AND JUST LEAVES IT AS A HOT AIR INTAKE......... She didn't want to run a full cold air intake that goes down in the bumper for fear of sucking up water because it rains a lot here so I built her a short ram intake with the heat shield and then did a custom air duct that goes down to the front bumper where the fog light would sit and I also wrapped the intake tube itself in Gold reflective heat tape!!! it dropped her intake air temperatures on a hot summer day down from 140 degrees down to 70° and by doing that it's seriously made the car happy I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW LOUD the VTec crossover was..... IT'S INSANE (((for a sohc r18))) It did not do that with the stock air box it did not do that with just the short ram intake by itself but after adding the heat shield and the air duct and then wrapping the gold reflective heat tape around the intake tube Those colder temperatures met that car so much happier when you punch it and now she has the benefit of a short ram intake so she doesn't have to worry about sucking up water like a true cold air intake BUT STILL GETS THE BENEFIT OF COLD AIR Yes it's not a performance car compared to any of my Hondas I've built over the years but she loves it I have made it to a complete SI replica with the grill front and rear bumpers the SI spoiler Wheels etc and now I have even done a header and down pipe and a full Cat-Back exhaust And just for the hell of it I took one of my Honda's and put it on her car and went and had it Dyno tuned It may not be fast but damn the car is so much more fun than it was stock and she is happy with it for when she still wants to try to race somebody once in a blue moon on a red light or just have fun on some back roads even in her fifties I myself have a 95 Civic Coupe that used to have a fully built d16 Z6 NA all motor high compression build that was pushing almost 200 hp at the wheels which was almost unheard of out of an all motor d-series but I wanted to be different Now it has a k24 block K20 head built all motor with full bolt ons now it's a bare Bones track car And my very very rare edition 2004 Honda Accord V6 6-speed manual coupe with the very rare hfp Honda factory performance package only 1 of 500 ever made with full bolt on the J series pushing 320HP at the wheels perfect daily driver

have you tried premium in the r18? i live in texas so heat is a problem. it suprised me that the owners manual actually stated that if you use premium fuel, you will notice a performance increase. its not massive but cruising takes less throttle, better low end power so it doesnt bog with ac quite as hard and it seems to keep pulling all the way to 6500rpm. i initially did it because in the 110f days, i would hear the motor ping on take off (manual trans).

looks like im late to the party here... Only critical info i have to add here is that the block is technically rated for 300HP if we can trust the guys in the honda forums. Defenitely not worth it to modify unless you really love this car for some reason. Also something people should know before buying one of these is that the R18s had a recall for micro cracks in the lower block that leaks oil slowly.I think it was caused by a casting defect. My 07 civic LX 5 speed is currently leaking through the vtech solenoid gasket but not the block. got the new gasket ready to go in soon : ]

Part of the wonder of KZbin is it's never too late to contribute to a topic. Thanks for stopping by. I wish I had known about the block recall before making this video, but I've heard about it at length subsequently. These motors are pretty hard to beat in a number of departments, but that's definitely a consideration for prospective buyers. The Honda forums talk a lot of talk. As I see it, Honda overengineers basically everything they make, so it doesn't surprise me that some ambitious people with too much time and money on their hands have pushed these motors pretty far. But just because Honda enables us to push the envelop doesn't mean its a good idea. My R18 has some leaking issues along the valve cover gasket, that might be something I fix this summer, but I have bigger fish to fry with the Civic atm. I hope all goes well with your Honda. Thank you for taking the time to view and comment!

I'm glad you liked the video. I made this some years ago before I had any real world exposure so I was pretty oblivious, it's just for fun. As you mentioned, there's a number of reasons why you don't typically see big displacement motors in competitive rally. River City Rally's IS350 rally cars with their 3.5 L V6s tend to do quite well, but they do get very loose and while you occasionally run into V8s like in Pat Moro's Chevy Sonic they aren't that common in top categories. This video is very much for hobbyists though, and I think there's some room there for bigger displacement motors if you accept their inherent limitations.

I've got a 2009 Civic coupe. Weird little space ship looking thing. It's got one of these. It's fast enough to handle the motorway. The low end torque has gotten me out of trouble a few times (Dodging idiots). Of course this means it's just powerful enough to do stupid things, but it's like Honda sat down and said "Lets make the perfect engine for a daily" and nailed it. It's a manual and currently thinks it's averaging 39.4 MPG.

The design is so mid 2000s, particularly the coupe, I love it. I'm always impressed by how easy it is to spin the tires in some conditions, it feels solidly torquey for a 1.8L. It really is an incredibly well-rounded engine with its outstanding fuel economy, competent power, and fun personality. The more economy cars from this time period I drive the more I appreciate what Honda was able to do with this powerplant. It's also shockingly durable and dependable. My 8th gen is at over well 260,000 miles now and still starts up and runs right every time. Recently I've been RXing it after my sibling recked it and even sitting after sitting in the high RPM all day it still chugs along just fine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLCmoywZ6ifhZY kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKWvmKdnm5WEkM0

Could i turn a jeep patriot into a rally car?
@carpartsandexhaustfarts
@carpartsandexhaustfarts 7 ай бұрын
Sure you could, but there are a number of factors to consider. Could you slap some knobby tires on and rip it down some dirt roads? Sure. Could you do that safely? Probably not. Could you enter it in competition? Depends on the competition. SCCA RallyCross (where most people get started with amateur level rally) generally requires that cars have a low rollover risk since cages aren't required, but I have seen a Chevy Blazer and an old Ford F1 truck out at a few events, so SUVs aren't explicitly prohibited. HPD ran a Honda Passport for a little while in ARA and did quite well with it, so you can totally run a compact SUV in stage rally and get away with it. Keep in mind though, if you want to do stage rally you need to invest about $15k in safety equipment and the like to fit the regs, so you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to put $15k into a Jeep Patriot for stage rally (not to mention the additional costs of ARA). I'd imagine you're not asking that question with serious stage rally in mind though, I'd imagine you're asking because you've already got a Jeep Patriot as your street car and you want to have some fun on the weekends. If that's your situation than yes, it's feasible. Race what you've got, have fun and enjoy the community. SCCA RX is a great way to get involved. I will say though that it's probably not the best option. Jeep Patriots are pretty notorious for reliability/quality issues, and those issues will all be massively exacerbated by intense RX driving. I personally would be a little worried about rollover risk as well. If you want to do RX or rally more seriously and not destroy your daily, I'd look into a well used Subaru or some other cheap second hand option that you don't feel bad about destroying, but still has enough life left to hold up to some serious abuse. If you're interested in learning more about my first time with RX, I made a video about it you can watch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLCmoywZ6ifhZY Good luck and have fun! (P.S. This is all coming from the assumption you're thinking about getting involved in American Rally, if you're from EU or another market I don't have enough good info to really tell you much.)

Typically what I’ve noticed on hondas, the only way to make it a chronic oil burner before 100k. Is the person who first bought it, at say 10 miles right off the lot. They probably never ever changed the oil. And if they did, they did the first oil change at 30,000 miles. And at that point all the rings are shot for the remainder of the cars life. @carpartsandexhaustfarts 11 ай бұрын
I made this list before I had any real world experience and I didn't really have a clue what I was talking about, but you do see some pretty successful front engine rear wheel drive cars in rally with some relatively heavy motors. Michael Hooper and the River City Rally crew run the Lexus IS350 which has a relatively hefty V6 up front and they've been doing quite well overall (competitive with R5s and the like). I know there are a few Foxbody mustangs that hold their own in ARA too. I imagine the big Windsor/Romeo V8s in the SN95s would carry too much weight up front to offset the lackluster power they'd be delivering in the rear though, so I'd imagine they wouldn't be too practical. I was really just in the "what's the cheapest RWD car you can reasonably get" mindset.

All plans for next season. You wouldn't believe how bad the suspension is, we got pretty lucky that no serious undercarriage damage was done. It's pretty reluctant to rotate unless you get a lot of weight transfer/brake going. It would be nice to get more rotation out. We decided to keep ABS on to ensure we didn't create any problems once we got it back on the street and because neither of us has much real world experience with threshold braking. The ABS and possibly the brake booster will probably go before we take it out again, left foot braking was a pain with both active.

I'm confused about the description about the VTEC in the r18 you described. My understanding is the two outside lobes on the cam are symmetrical, and the middle is the deeper lobe. That is traditional intake VTEC. I could feel and hear it engage just above 5k rpm. Am I misunderstanding? This motor was not the e VTEC.

I perhaps didn't do the best job of describing it. The IVTEC in the R18 operates off of the same basic principle as other VTEC system wherein two separate cam profiles can be selected. In old style traditional VTEC (and IVTEC in the K20), this switch in cam profiles to a more aggressive cam is triggered by reaching a certain RPM, usually around 5k. However, this is not how the R18 works. IVTEC in R18 is Intelligent VTEC, which is not determined by RPM alone, instead a number of values are weighed by the ECU and used to inform when the cam profile should be switched from a "normal" state (better for power and torque delivery) to a "economy" state (providing better cruising characteristics and fuel economy). Under normal driving, this switch is made around 3.5k. So unlike in other Honda platforms, you have more power and torque down low and your cam profile becomes more mellow once you get into the higher RPM (unless you keep on throttle or the ECU determines the standard cam is still needed, in which case the cam profile will not change). This makes the R18 feel more like a 2.0 liter down low when getting up to speed and more like a 1.5 when cruising on the highway, offering the best of both worlds. The kick you experienced around 5k (which is also something I've experienced with my R18 as well) is most likely the variable intake manifold, which opens valves in the intake runners at different RPM to change the path of air into the intake, allowing the engine to more efficiently generate power at differing speeds. There's one geometry for low down power and torque, and another geometry that is triggered around 5k which provides better high end power for highway passing. TLDR; The R18 has "Intelligent" VTEC that does not kick in at 5k, rather it is dependent on whatever the ECU decides is best. Instead of switching from a "normal" to a "performance" cam like in other systems, the R18 IVTEC switches from a low speed "normal" cam to a high speed "economy" cam for better highway mpg. The bump in power around 5k is due to the variable intake manifold. I’m new to all this. What site are you using to find these cars ?

I made this when I was younger with less experience and less of a grip on how rally actually works, but I've got a better understanding now. Most of the listings I found for this video I pulled off craigslist or facebook marketplace, which are great resources for used cars if you know how to spot scams and money pits. If you want to get involved in ARA (American Rally Association), you need a car that fits their regulations, including all the safety equipment. Retrofitting a street car to meet ARA certification is going to cost $15-$30k when you factor in seats, harnesses, roll cage, fire suppression, etc. Most people get into stage rally by picking up a used rally car that's already been modified to meet the ARA rules (or a previous version of the ARA rules). The best sites I've seen to find used rally cars are www.specialstage.com/forums/rally-cars-for-sale.84/ and rallyanarchy.com/phorum/list.php?7. ARA is a great ruleset that runs on a lot of awesome stages all throughout the country, but it is a serious financial commitment. The cheapest way to get into rally is to find a rallycross organizer close to where you live and participate in some local rallycross. All you need is a street legal car, a driver's license, a helmet (but you can usually borrow one), and enough money to pay for registration (no more than $70). Any of the cars I mentioned in this video would be well suited to rallycross, and you could pretty feasibly pick one up and start running it. My buddy Nick and I actually have been taking the 2006 Civic featured in the thumbnail out to our local rallycross and it's been awesome, here's a video we made about our first experience: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLCmoywZ6ifhZY We should have another video out that goes into more detail on how to get involved, but it's pretty straightforward. If you have any other questions, feel free to respond to this comment.

Tragically yes, Kubo Kordish in the #436 Fiesta was involved in an accident on this stage beyond where this was filmed. Please consider donating to RACEAID to support his family. www.raceaid.fund/donate dirtfish.com/rally/ara/ara-competitor-loses-life-on-show-me-rally/
