It was not the hatch covers not being dogged down. If I am correct and I believe I am those covers weighed 7 tons each. There was an experiment by experts blasting water into those covers equal to the amount of water the Fitz was taking on over her deck. Even with no covers dogged it only amounted to an extremely insignificant amount of water entering the hold. The crew was not to blame. The company wanted to blame it on the crew in order to get the insurance money and hide the fact that the ship was badly in need of repair. Who really knows what happened to the Fitz? Only God. God bless those brave men who were lost.
