Is it worth getting an MBA to break into somewhere like MBB? I have 8 years of experience working as a engineer in Canada but would like to try to pivot to consulting but am finding it hard. It seems one of the easier paths is to get an MBA from a target school.

This is a great question. My wife and other family members have MBAs from top 10 schools in the US. I can confidently say it's not required. It can sometimes be an "easy" way to land the interview, but the rest is all about how you interview. Another way to land an interview with a consulting firm is essentially to network with other consultants at places you are looking to potentially work or take a chance working for a smaller consulting firm that is willing to take a chance on you. Additionally, you could also get a certification that helps boost your resume in terms of visibility above others for firms you are applying to. Hope this helps!

So if you know for certain you want to go into consulting, and have decided to go to college, I’d say MIS is the best major followed by some business degree if MIS isn’t your jam. UT Austin VS A&M, I don’t think you can go wrong either way to be honest. Both are solid institutions. I’m a longhorn though so definitely lean UT Austin ha

The 11th strategy I’ve used in my career is to simply ask my manager what it takes to level up within the organization and continue making progress. After a few months, I provide a new plan or propose an alternative approach (supported by data) to my manager and discuss it with them. I also challenge myself by putting myself in difficult scenarios and continue asking (with the right manners) what it takes to advance in my career This is called nudging, and if you gently ask your manager regularly, while performing well and following his/her guidelines and providing new ways of thinking you’re almost guaranteed to make a jump in your career path

Thanks man. I have McLaren now! I do miss the Ferrari. I’m a director in software consulting dealing with specific process areas such as quote to revenue. Essentially it’s software sales teams and finance teams use for their daily tasks and more.
