How long does a typical scan of an uninitialized disk take, and what factors can influence that duration? If the scan is taking a really long time, should I just let it run to the end, or is it safe to stop?

It can vary depending on drive size, condition, connection speed, fragmentation, and scan type. If the scan is progressing, it's best to let it run, but if it gets stuck for hours, the disk may have bad sectors. In that case, consider scanning a backup instead.

This usually means file system corruption or bad sectors. First, check connections and try another PC to see if the drive is detected. If it shows as RAW or unallocated in Disk Management, don’t format it before trying to recover data with Disk Drill. If detected, try CHKDSK (chkdsk X: /f /r) to fix errors, but if it fails, the drive may be too damaged. If it doesn’t work and you don’t need the data, formatting might be the only option.

Intializing disks is often followed by formatting them. Avoid formatting the disk if you're trying to recover data, as it will erase it. Try Disk Drill to recover data first.

A "quick format" will not actually delete, or rather in the case of a format, write over the data. A quick format only modifies the partition table, allowing the computer or device to write new data over existing data. But until written over, the original data will physically remain on the drive and can be recovered. It only appears to be gone in the operating system.

If the drive is empty or you don’t need the data, then converting to GPT is fine. Otherwise, make sure to recover data beforehand.

@@cleverfiles Converting a disk from MBR to GPT does not wipe the drive. It can be done using "diskpart" or numerous other free tools. There is also a tool specifically to convert from MBR to GPT called "mbr2gpt". You can easily find tools and simple guides online. It is not a complicated process. That being said, although I have never experienced issues, it is always recommended to backup the files on a disk before you perform any drive operations.

These are temporary files from Word. I recommend searching your Temp folder for these files and try renaming them to .docx or .doc. Check Word’s AutoRecovery and Unsaved Documents sections for backups. You can also scan your drives with Disk Drill. Make sure to preview your files before recovery.

Yes, it likely has a hardware failure. Try a different card reader, PC or inspect for damage. Use Diskpart and check Device Manager for errors and tools like Disk Drill for data recovery. If the card still shows 0 bytes or isn’t detected, it's probably dead 😢

Checking individual drives won’t immediately help since data is spread across them with parity. Do not initialize or format any drives, as this can make recovery harder. If only one drive failed, replacing it might allow a rebuild and if multiple failed, recovery is more complex.

Hi. I have a problem. I was moving the files (photographs, screenshots and videos) from my phone to a laptop with a phone charging cable. I have an android. I selected all the folders with those files in them that I wanted to move on my laptop. I marked them all and then clicked cut for all of them and then I clicked paste in the wanted folder on my desktop. Something went wrong, there was an error and I clicked skip for all the files that couldn't be transferred. And there are no files any more. They are not in my phone's gallery or on my laptop. Sir, I would be very thankful if you could help me with getting those files back...
