You are welcome to deny a person their sense of agency and self, I just ask you to claim responsibility for this based on an experience you don’t have that also doesn’t align with your operational definitions. If someone asks you to do something for them, you just need to trust they know themselves better than you do. If you can’t do this then it is about you not them.

While I respect your opinion here & think that you made an admirable argument, I have to admit I still disagree. For most people, I believe it's much less an inability to alter their language & "respect" their identity & more an unwillingness to alter they language based on a person's personal view of themself. The example you gave is perfect, actually, because with a Caterpillar becoming a butterfly & the language changing to match this identity, the main difference is that a Caterpillar goes through a true, natural metamorphosis from one "identity" to the other. There is a natural reality to support this change in identity & language & there is only one predetermined change. Unlike with people & their gender. There is no natural reality behind this change. The change is only the personal opinion of the individual. There's no reality to support it. Only the opinion of their identity, not a natural reality. Also, there is no limitation as to the possibilities of this change. There is no defining trait, such as physically growing wings. With no reality, no limitations, no defining natural, physical trait, or even a distinguishing characteristic to present this change with, we are literally being asked to alter our language for each person as they perceive their individual identity, not reality, & to do so only upon either the offered opinion of the individual or the request of their opinion simply to be able to continue forward in what would be considered the only way to hold a "respectable" conversation under this new, & highly controversial, ideology.

I'm bummed to have missed the 1st live Book Club gathering. As way of introduction, I live in Orlando, FL and I believe I met Jess through her husband Loren, while they were attending the Gender Odyssey Conference in Seattle probably back in 2007 or 2008 (first year Couples Track was offered). As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I believe spreading the message of being Good Enough Now gives people room to stop, breathe, and appreciate their own progress.

Hey Jessica...I was in Outspoken with you 15 years ago at NYU :). I found myself thinking of the moving sidewalk today, when I just found out about Minneapolis. I've been taking a break from walking back on that sidewalk for about the last 15 years, and I felt somehow responsible. Like I haven't done enough. And I searched for you because I felt like I needed inspiration and to feel better about the world, and somehow you do that, still. So thank you :). I watched your unstoppable video, too. Great stuff! ♥️Adrian

So this brings up a question that came up with a friend recently around cross dressing (long story) - would you say that 'sex' is biological and 'gender' is a social construct?
@JessPettitt6 жыл бұрын
Carolyn's RV Life great question. Gender is def a social construct that evolves and changes over time and place. Sex is typically determined by socially constructed expectations and guidelines that have also changed over time as to what external genitalia look like and at some point in one’s life how assumed or measured hormone levels, and/or chromosomes impact a person. Here there are secondary sex characteristics that are biological results that are perceived or interpreted by others (e.g. man boobs vs breasts are both fat storage on a chest and socially mean different things)
