I've actually found modern chinese culture to be more alike american than say japanese/korean, china and america are actually really similar in size, geography (north to south, east to west), large diverse population, lots of national pride, a can-do attitude, everyone wants to live well and take care of their family, china is actually the most "individualistic" society in east asia if you compare to korea, japan, singapore, etc. There's probably a lot of stuff in common culturally between chinese and americans than they each realize.

I do feel more free in China than in Japan. In Japan, one constantly needs to be mindful about his/her own behavior. In China, there’s more room to express myself. And since China is much cheaper, there’s more freedom to try out food or things that interest us.

Having recently traveled back-to-back to both Shanghai and Tokyo for business, while both are great, Shanghai felt more modern, had newer infrastructure, was a lot greener, and had a better mix of ultra-modern and historical buildings. Overall, China wins.

In China, people generally don't care much about what you do. Unlike Japan, there aren't many oppressive rules and regulations that make you feel constrained. It's also very safe. Even if you dress provocatively, people might just give you a few extra glances (which I personally think is probably because they find you attractive). You won't encounter the kind of harassment you might experience in Japan, like Chikan on trains. BTW, Welcome to Shanghai

@@zefengc Of course, China is so vast, each region has its own unique cultural customs. But based on the points I mentioned above, China is definitely better than Japan.
