As always, your homily gives us a lot to think about. However, today's was exceptionally well presented. It will give us plenty to consider and act upon as our elections (U.S.) approach.

I just discovered your services. Wonderful sermon. Helps me to focus on what we should be doing. Also, it's nice not to hear about politics in church. In the States, that's all we ever hear.

I was in awe of Gord. He had so many practical skills. As head of building research at NRC, he knew so much about home construction which could be used for his own home and to advise his friends. I often sought his wisdom when we built our own. He could play his guitar well and we benefited from that too especially when he and a large group of our friends arrived at our new lawn-less home with sod and guitars. They surprised us by laying down the sod and then singing a song they’d composed "SOD BUSTERS" to the tune of Ghost Busters, a contemporary song and movie at the time, to entertain us and our neighbours who applauded the venture. He also was instrumental in having an outdoor Eucharist in Andrew Park in the summer months, a powerful witness in a community that was by no means entirely Christian. There was a lot of interest and onlookers in the neighbourhood. Much of what we Gord, Heather, and our friends did together were as couples. A chief example was that six couples (or units) formed a group we called the Baker‘s Dozen (which is one more than a dozen), because we were 12 PLUS God. We had weekends away, games, meals, murder mysteries, all stemming from our Marriage Encounters, which each couple had experienced at different times. Soon after, we all experienced and became leaders in Cursillo. Most of us were heavily involved in the Anglican church. Gord specialised in worship music along with Heather. They assembled a book of worship songs along with appropriate licenses for use in Cursillo. Four of the couples worshipped at St John's South March where our delightful clergy couple - Fr Ed & Margaret Atwell often quizzed us, "What is the underground church planning today?" We spent many joyful times with God, Gord & Heather at the Walt’s Patterson lake cottage in Quebec. We felled some unwanted trees and only one glanced off the cottage (despite all attempts to control the fall). Together we grieved as one of our units broke, and which we attempted to restore. So, we leaned on each other and smoothed out many rough spots as we grew closer to each other and to God. We became more tolerant to others as we grew in love. Gord surprised me once by proclaiming loudly PTL (meaning "Praise the Lord)." I say surprised because it seemed so out of character - even though this was what we always practiced. No-one had dared be so bold to proclaim what we believed, so LOUDLY. We knew that to enter heaven, we must love God and our neighbour deeply, preferably unconditionally, emulating God’s agape love. Frequently, we used to talk about eternity and our hope (but not our assumption) that we might make it there. A few months ago, I visited Gord in hospital - his son John was there - and asked Gord if he got to heaven first, would he meet me and show me around, if I also got there. I said that I would do the same for him if we both got there. Since, Churchgoers believe that the body of Christ includes those living and departed, we share with those that are departed who are still our brothers and sisters in Christ and pray that they will be refreshed and filled with God’s, love, joy and peace. Love passes into prayer and I still love Gord, so hold him in that love before God.

Surah Ikhlas (سوره اخلاص) is one of the most important chapters of the Quran because it speaks of one of the pillars of beliefs of Islam, i.e. the unity and oneness of God or monotheism. It is a chapter that describes God and His attributes and introduces Him to us as He would like us to know Him. Therefore, it is of vital importance for every Muslim to read and try to understand the profound teachings given to us in this chapter. Accordingly, this article delves into this chapter and seeks to provide an understanding, albeit very primary, for it. It touches upon the discussion of tawhid (توحید) , which is the central theme of Surah Ikhlas, its importance and types as well as ikhlas (اخلاص) or sincerity, which is one of the names of the chapter and its connection to monotheism. 112 Surah no. Juz’ 30 Place Makki Makki/Madani 102 Order of revelation 4 No. of verses 47 No. of words Arabic Text and Translation of Surah Ikhlas Surah Ikhlas Recitation بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيم In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, most merciful قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ﴿1﴾ Say: He, Allah, is One, اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ﴿2﴾ Allah is He on Whom all depend, لَمْ يَلِدْ وَ لَمْ يُولَدْ ﴿3﴾ He begets not, nor is He begotten, وَ لَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدُ ﴿4﴾ Nor has He any equal.
