I do deep dive research on these types of things, mostly for myself. I was going to purchase one today, but after watching this I am now hesitant. Maybe I should wait to see if the LeGo 2 is better. Or maybe I just get an Asus RoG Ally X instead. I already have a Steam Deck OLED and a Switch OLED. Both do exactly what I want them to do, the SD needed a little bit of tweaking here and there, it does what it was built to do with a tragic battery life. I will continue to research for a handheld that is supported by its creator. So far though for me Switch is leading the charge, shockingly.

Ehh, mine were pretty okay. But it's totally subjective. I enjoyed the sticks, they had more tension. The face buttons were fine, but the d-pad was an abomination. Not sure who greenlit that shallow design, practically unusable.

I am buying one tomorrow. Albeit used. A FB marketplace selling lowered it from 400 to 300 with an official dock. So I jumped on it! I can't wait! He's right! Amazing device but Lenovo's follow through with their device is TRASH! The Go has so much potential if Lenovo took the time to perfect it rather than try to put a newer more expensive model on the street. I realize all these companies can really care less about the end product because they are on to the next. They already have your money in hand so it doesn't matter. You are right though, if you want a premium device you will have to tinker with, go with the Legion Go. If you want something that just works, go with an Steam Deck.

As someone looking into buying my first PC handheld - primarily as a cheap(ish) way to build up a steam library - this was really helpful. I think I might get one from a place that has a X number of days return policy and see how I get on.

Absolutely, that's always the best option! Watch/read as many reviews as possible, then try it out yourself and have a return window as a back-up plan. 🙌

I have reservations for all the reasons you’ve listed. But, that larger screen is just easier on my eyes. The Ally X is just a flat no at 7”. The Steam Deck OLED is passable at 7.4” but only because it’s also OLED and has a lower pixel density and this slightly easier to see. I will certainly be buying the gen2 of this with the OLED screen and am honestly amazed that Lenovo claims the gen2 joycons will be backwards compatible. Not typically Lenovo’s style.
@CGD.Studio6 күн бұрын
Totally get that. The difference in experience is staggering, honestly. I mean, if you can snag a used LeGo for like $400-450 or something I think it's definitely worth buying. I don't think the LeGo 2 is coming out before Summer, if even then. And it'll surely be over $1000, most likely $1100 or $1200 which, I dunno, it's just way too expensive for that level of performance. I'm not crazy about the idea of paying that much money and still not being able to play AAA games with reasonable performance and image quality, without having to resort to a ton of upscaling and frame gen. You can get a used first-gen handheld _and_ a PS5 for that kind of money, and still have some left over. 😅

I don't think that's a viable excuse at this point, to be honest. The competition is _fierce_ and if a company doesn't come out the gates with either a fleshed out product or a compelling price point, they're not gonna succeed. Research and development for these handhelds is mighty expensive, and so is maintenance, and if an OEM doesn't get a sizable return on investment, they're either gonna put it on ice or scrap the whole thing altogether. :/ Valve, ASUS, and Lenovo have a stronghold over the market, and a €850 Zotac Zone with less RAM and half the battery size of an Ally X or MSI Claw 8 simply isn't gonna sell. There are simply better options out there for the money, and they're cheaper and more well-rounded. Sure, they don't have an AMOLED panel, but that's their only "downside." I'm currently working on the full review, and while it's definitely great in certain areas, it's definitely not worth buying over some other alternatives. :/
@kisigma101112 күн бұрын
@CGD.Studio thank you for your feedback but yes my biggest issue with these handheld is the screen once u go OLED u cant go back i have high hopes for Zotact zone also the bezel need to be remove from all pc handhelds!
@CGD.Studio12 күн бұрын
I couldn't agree more, OLED is a game-changer, but other things matter a ton as well. It's a native portrait display which messes up a lot of games, the software is half-baked at best and can be seriously limiting if you have to tinker with the settings, the fan noise is obnoxious even with a custom fan curve (above 24W at least), the trackpads are horrible and barely work, the kickstand is the worst I've ever used and is far too stiff, and if you move it while the fan is spinning the shell will literally clash with the fan which could cause some serious damage. There's also a lot of creaking while you handle it so it isn't as well-built as the ROG Ally or the Legion Go. And it has a 48Wh battery which means that battery life is mediocre at best. So other than the AMOLED display, it doesn't have a whole lot going for it, especially for €850. :/

@@CGD.Studiodid you see the new model that zotac made that was shown off at ces? It comes in white, has the new amd chip, and has 32gb of ram. I am really excited for it. The battery is the same size but the model they showed at ces is a prototype, and zotac said they were looking into increasing the battery size. I don’t know if I should go with the zone 2 the legion go 2 now lol.
@CGD.Studio10 күн бұрын
Trust me, wait for the Go 2. 😁 It's not even gonna be close. Plus, the Zone 2 will surely be more expensive cause it'll have the HX 370. The Z2 Extreme is essentially the same thing without the AI parts, and it's cheaper. But it's insanely incomplete as a device. I can't recommend it, honestly. Working on the final review but it's not worth buying. Looks amazing and the display is orgasmic, but everything else is half-baked.

My biggest complaint with the windows handhelds is when you buy them the first like 4 hours is just installing updates and drivers and stuff. Then once you do that and you download your games you have to go in and mess with the frame generation or the integer scaling or the Radeon super resolution and mess with all the different settings to get the game to run the way that you want it to run. So I do like how on the steam deck it has just a quick access menu that you pull out and can quickly adjust the settings and that's it super easy. Also I just got my legion Go for $400 at Best buy on sale and then returned it because after like 3 days the right bumper would just work sometimes. And it was super buggy and I had to detach the controllers and reattach them to get the game to recognize that I was trying to use a controller versus on the ally you can just hit the quick menu and toggle the gamepad but that's not a thing on the legion for some reason
@CGD.Studio17 күн бұрын
Couldn't agree more. It's on the OEM to create a sensible and simple overlay and allow us to change as many settings as we need on the fly. And it needs to be easily accessible at all points. Lenovo's still not there yet although they've improved, but ASUS finally caught up with Valve. Armory Crate, in my experience, is absolutely amazing at this point. Sorry to hear about your unit. :/
@nexxus_848717 күн бұрын
@@CGD.Studio absolutely. Armory crate is much better. And Legion Space has improved and the quick access menu, but now it seems too...cheap..or cheesy if that's makes sense. Having that little spiny triangle over your settings, reminds me of playing on an N64 back in the day lol

What's worse is that the Go S will have a pretty outdated chipset with the 680M iGPU and will still sell for like €600 or something. 😁 I mean, come on. Hey Bro great review Thank You. Something that might interest you. Noise? I have the 32gig version of this laptop myself. Loving it for sure. OLED all the way. I noticed that my model had a small whistle sound situation. After investigating I learned that it was the air moving through the vents. This was really pissing me off. I actually took the back panel off to see the sound difference and it was pretty noticeable. Glad it wasn't my fans. So I decided to cut holes in the back panel with small strong nail pointy vice clippers. Worked great easy. Just around the fans only. When the fans kick in the whistling is now 100% gone and the sound is quieter as well. This made me happy. Then I also took a play out of the Mac book Air Thermal Pad mod. I ordered some thermal pads and placed them on top of the heat sinks so that the pads touch the back panel. This just made the laptop even quieter for longer if not all the time while doing Windows stuff. Silent all the time this is huge. It's like a Mac book Air now Silent. When gaming or doing intense CPU/GPU work the fans kick in still but their quieter due to the holes. To add when I use the laptop on battery I never game so I take sticky notes and tape and cover up the holes to protect the fans. When the fans need to kick in it still cools more then enough with out issues. There basically there all the time I take them off when I game. Also in the future if I ever want to sell the unit a back panel can be ordered from Lenovo. On battery mode I set windows up to most power efficient, obviously for more on usage time and the vans pretty much never kick in. Right now plugged in while the power setting is on balance mode no van noise at all. The Thermal pads work really well. Thank you for a cool review. To add, Lenovo power settings are on silent mode always pretty much. I only change that when gaming. The windows power settings really move the Clock speeds on the CPU a lot. I run Windows 11 X-Lite a great modded version of windows. The Micro version. So much is removed the system always flies.

My question is can this beat a 500 dollar gaming laptop in performance as i am getting the legion go at 500 dollars here.
@CGD.Studio27 күн бұрын
That really depends on the laptop. I'm pretty sure you can get a laptop with an RTX 3050 for around $500/600 when it's on sale, and it's going to outperform _all_ of these handhelds devices (an understatement). Even the RTX 2050 will deliver better performance. But the laptops are not gonna be as well built, they'll probably be louder, and they'll have much worse displays (lower contrast, not as saturated, subpar color accuracy, 250-300 nits of brightness maximum). So you get some you lose some. 😁

@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Well, I mean, for the amount of money you can get it for, I think it deserves a lot of glazing. 😁 I've seen used 256GB Steam Decks in Europe for as low as €250, for that amount of money I think it's impossible to beat. I don't think it's better than the Ally X or the Legion Go, that's just not true. But it _does_ provide a kind of value that no other device can match. *By the way, this video is almost a year old, and a lot has changed since then. 😁 Back then, the Legion Go sold for $699 + tax or €800 in Europe, so a different set of circumstances.*

Oh for sure, but there's a lot of people out there who would like to buy a device like this and don't know the first thing about creating a bootable flash drive, you know? It's good that there's an alternative, a way to deal with some (if not all of these) issues and quirks, but those of us who are tech savvy often forget that we're actually the minority. On all handheld subreddits, every other post is related to things like _how do I change the TDP_ or _what does VRAM mean_ or _what is AFMF2_ and so on. 😅 And that's okay, there's no shame in not knowing, but it's important for people to be aware of what they're getting themselves into.

8” screen, 32gb of RAM and oculink support and this would have been my next purchase! We’re so close to perfection, I’d hold your cash. If you’re dying to buy a handheld get the SD Oled. Price, ergonomics, oled, touch pads, Linux, direct support from steam and valve. Look into undervolting and over clocking. Increase TDP to 20w and get cooling fan. Best bang for buck and excellent current gen performance. Did I mention oled.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Sadly, I don't think we're gonna get Oculink on any mainstream option. :/ Too "proprietary" for their liking. But if you need 8" and 32GB of RAM, that new MSI Claw 8 would probably deliver, despite having an IPS panel as opposed to an OLED one. But a machine like that could very well serve as a mini PC. Stellar single-core performance, ample RAM, and two TB4 ports. Hard to complain.
@captaintruthАй бұрын
@ thanks for the feedback, just looked into the new MSI claw and WOW! What a spec sheet! Little bit of a wait yet in the UK though, be interesting to see if the legion go 2 is announced before release here. It’s a very exciting time in handhelds! My first was a game boy colour which was ace but it thought GBA was incredible, then DS I couldn’t believe I was seeing 3D in my hands, PSP took it to another level. The Vita was such a brilliant machine but never saw it’s full potential from lack of game support. Now we’re at this point now and honestly it is staggering. The current gen have all pushed the envelope but all seem to miss something. Whether it’s the OLED, poor ergonomics, poor connectivity for egpu support, small battery, small screen. It’s like we need a Frankenstein machine to get the best. Legion go 2 is my top predicted pick for 2025, if they offer OLED with smoother FPS and hopefully VRR then it’s going to be an incredible machine. MSI 8 AI+ looks amazing and is also on my potential hit list so thanks for that! I’m interested in EGPU support so big RAM is crucial. The CPU looks really impressive and the GPU great for mobile. Shame no OLED but I intend to buy viture pro xrs and also regularly dock.
