Do you have better luck on a particular tide?
@ckwoutdoors4 күн бұрын
Lately it's been the end of the incoming tide in the afternoon specifically, but in general I think the incoming tide is always better. Nice clean Salty water coming in from the gulf and a lot of current past the structure seems to get them fired up

I clicked on this video expecting some kind of trite superficial advice I could find elsewhere online. But I am absolutely blown away at how unique and in depth this advice is. I am going to attempt to adapt some of this advice to recording first person mountain biking videos. Thank you.

You ahould use a small ziptie or small thin rope loop tied to the tip to hook on the the wire hook so that your rod tip doesmt get damaged and it never will if anything itll damage the lil rope loop

Good fishing. But DEP’s in our state have been suggesting to use biodegradable materials instead like cotton meat netting or the lowly cotton gauze. Safer for the fish if you got bit off and also for the environment.
@njsurfrider10 күн бұрын
I was wondering the same, more plastic in the water is not good.
10 күн бұрын
@@njsurfrider NJ here too but mostly off a boat or jetski. This technique I've seen since i was a kid. People back then even use table scraps wrapped in cotton gauze. No worries leaving plastics in the guts of fish.

Thanks! I'm all for using eco-friendly solutions. Maybe I'll do a video showing some of those options soon 🤙
@ckwoutdoors10 күн бұрын
I agree. Luckily I didn't break any fish off this day that would result in them ingesting the mesh, but still living. This is a convenient little trick but I'll show some other choices soon 😊
10 күн бұрын
@ Yeah. Aside from meat netting and gauze.. There's also cotton spawn net and the like.... But based off personal experience, cotton gauze is the best cause it's brightly colored/ kinda resembles the whitish inside of their natural bait. Also absorbs the juices of the bait during prep which is released during actual use.. All positives. I'm just not sure why some would drive hours on end just to buy fiddler crabs and such. Just like most fish, Sheeps will eat almost anything; it's just the presentation.

Never fished for sheepheads before but I caught a monster on a soft bait. I use lures 95% of the time. Figured I would give it a try. Watched videos, baits used mud crabs, fiddlers, barnacles, oyster, mussels and even corn but never any squid. It seems like a match made in heaven. What am I missing? <>< <>< <>< <*((^(((><

26:19 Is the end of your rod getting any damage after multiple uses?? I would expect the last eye to get damaged from scraping on the metal every time a fish triggers it. A small blemish on that last eye can easily cut your line when a fish is on....

Dang I wanted to see one of those drums, you gotta use heavier line homie!
@ckwoutdoors18 күн бұрын
@oyabun8538 Youd think so, but the water was extremely clear this day. Going any higher than about 20lb leader will cause the sheep not to bite. Have to just accept you're gonna lose some fish when sheepshead fishing! As cool as the drum are they're just bycatch really. Now if I'm actively targeting drum then I'll run 30 or 40lb leader. But if I'm just wanting sheep 20lb max if I want lots of bites

@ckwoutdoors18 күн бұрын
@nothinginhere916 yup, that's just part of the game 🤣 unfortunately not much you can do about it. Size up your line too much and they'll quit biting, size up the rod too much and you won't feel them bite, no way to avoid it! I prefer to be in my yak so I can back them out of the structure but if using oysters thats way to messy to be in my lap in the yak hahaha. Oh well, got 3 fish landed at least! Thank you!

Have you tried canned oysters/clams from Walmart? I’m afraid my boat would get tore up pulling up to the pilings 😂
@ckwoutdoors18 күн бұрын
@twistedmoto7759 yeah, the oysters definitely tear up your boat. My yak is all scratched up from years of doing it lol. Ive tried the raw oysters you can get in a container at Wal Mart in the refrigerated seafood section. They do okay, but not nearly as good in my opinion. I've made them work though. It's just very expensive to do that, they're like 5 to 10 bucks for a pretty small container and youre gonna burn through them really fast since they're so fragile, especially if there are a lot of pinfish around. The easiest way to get them in your boat is to pull up to the piling, get all your gear you need on it, then tie off, jump up on the piling and let the boat drift out away from the structure on the downcurrent side secured to the piling by a line. Then you can use a long handle scraper and long handle net, lean over the side of the piling and scrape the oysters into the net to get them. That's what most people do so their boat isn't near the structure

Sheepshead love all crustacean. Fiddler crabs too
@ckwoutdoors18 күн бұрын
@jonlayton5834 Thats true, but sometimes they prefer one over the other and can be very picky. Most of the time if they won't eat anything crab, they'll eat an oyster. Oysters are their main food source this time of year and they eat way more of those than crabs
