Superb video! Framing of the video and focus were off in some places but you got a new subscriber based on this video alone.

38:55 I think this sequence could have been underlined more because it's important for the mechanism: the wheels with gates are linked to the shaft first, and the shaft is reset only after that. If the mechanism is worn so much that these happen at the same time, the lock may end up with incorrect sequence.

from 16:00 onwards, half the lock was out of frame, so we couldn't see what you were talking about :(

27:10 Great CAD models! (CAD = cardboard assisted design)

This is a fantastic explanation! Great work on the cardboard gears! They really helped me to visualize the mechanism better!

I know this is an old video but how does the latch open when the dead latch is depressed with the door being closed (i.e. standard operation)? Is there an arm which kicks the dead latch lever out the way the latch to retract?

This has to be one of my favorite KZbin videos of all time. Thank you for the incredibly detailed and well-presented information! These locks are very, very cleverly designed.

Just sayin', I obtained a Truck Vault security box with a Simplex 900 deadbolt as a lock. It was used, and the combination was unknown. I used your video to disassemble the lock, find out the combination and reset it. Thanks so much, your video saved me a $150 bucks at least!. Keep up the good work.

In case anyone else had some issues understanding how the mechanism is working. Here is video of decoding the lock visually, which shows one fact that I missed in this video the first time around, but is show nicely here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWTRn5qYYqqNeK8. The fact I missed to understand this otherwise very awesome method for decoding these locks (should have a def-con presentation) is that all (and only) wheels that have been engaged through button press spin on subsequent button presses. Thanks for this, I understand now and I'm off to give it a try

Don't get me wrong. This fact IS in this video @ 14:41, but I just missed it.

My lock (unlocks and locks) with the turn of the nob without the need to input the combination. How do I fix this problem?
@morningstarmadworks26793 жыл бұрын
Seems like you've set the combination to be nothing. To change that, remove the screw at the top, clear the lock, press the button under the screw (you'll need something long and pointed, a pen might work), enter your new combination, and then turn the knob to open the lock.

How does a user enable or disable the deadbolt?
@SoWe15 жыл бұрын
This was a very good video, I will get around to watching your other two as well. Why are you not making more videos? You are explaining it very well. What I didn't catch out of this is how the reset mechanism works and what exactly happens mechanically when you turn the knob. If that's in the other videos, I'll see it :) cheers

Warning! The bolt is very soft metal. This is typically the source of malfunctions with this lock.

Thanks for the video. I've always wondered what was going on inside these locks. They've always seemed to have an imprecise feel to me, but now that I see the internals, I can appreciate the innovative design. (I too found my way here after having been left hanging by the Lockpicking Lawyer's video.) Skip to 15:30 for the interesting stuff.

How does this not have any comments yet? Thanks for the DETAILED explanation. What a cool mechanical lock. Just came here from LockpickingLawyer's video on a similar lock, and a comment directed me here after commenting that I wondered how they worked. Most of their locks used vertical buttons, and it's clear that the mechanism was designed as such. They must have thought the circle was more appropriate for residential, or other more formal/less industrial uses?
@morningstarmadworks26795 жыл бұрын
Can't say I have a perfect answer for you. The form factor is different which might work better for certain doors. I've also seen them combined with a normal door knob so you can have multiple locks (figure a large group of people has the combo, but someone has the authority and ability to lock the knob). It also requires less equipment and effort to install in the door and frame. You only need to drill a hole for the button cylinder to pass through. Everything else is screwed into the door or wall. A typical door lock or deadbolt would require a more exact pattern, drilling the side of the door, and doing some carving with chisels.

Hi, I can't believe that I found this video!!! Our office uses the spring latch type lock and the outside lever frequently does not return to the locked position leaving the door unsecured. Can you tell me what might cause this?
@morningstarmadworks26795 жыл бұрын
Could be a few things, mainly friction or blockage. Try actuating the lock while the door is open. If that works fine, it's likely not a friction issues (if it is take it apart, give it a decent clean, and put it back together). If the lock works fine with the door open, the problem is likely that the bolt is hitting the catch. This probably means moving the catch out, which can be a pain, but you can unscrew it and slide something thing but sturdy under it to space it out from the wall (I'd recommend a business card) and see if that helps

what if you just used the magnet hack?
@morningstarmadworks26795 жыл бұрын
The magnet hack doesn't work on this model of lock. That's a different Simplex lock
