Since when is this word used to describe ppl with autism? For hundreds of years or is it "new" like whenever they first diagnosed autism?
@AltogetherAutism_NZ5 ай бұрын
Hi there. Yes, it's a newer phrase. It was coined around 2017 by Keri Opai, the man in the video. Opai wanted the word to disrupt the misinformation around autism and describe it in a different way, which is why he chose 'in his / her / their own time and space.' If you'd like, you can learn more in this article: www.altogetherautism.org.nz/a-time-and-space-for-takiwatanga/

Hey! May I ask if it’s ok to change the his/her to their? Does this affect the translation at all? Considering a large percentage of autistic adults are also non-binary, I’m hoping this is the case? 🤞. Many thanks and many many thanks for a beautiful word where the meaning touches my heart like nothing else ever has. Thank you 🙏 😊

Amazing, what a respectful description. A small piece of positivity about autism, which will hopefully grow.
