I want to try and get a house in the next 2-3 years with just enough land to raise layers and meat birds. Trying to learn as much I can. I don’t wanna get an incubator if my hen knows how to raise their chicks. I love seeing the natural process.

I dont claim to be a duck expert but all I heard was happy duck sounds.... they remind me of my childhood better times. We had one pied duck that used to follow us around if she saw a shovel or fork, expecting worms from digging. She would get in the way some times! Some good farming husbandry tips too! Soothing voice too.. You need to do audio books!

I just did this! I could not get my two chickens off the nests (should I say "keep them off"). We went and got a half dozen fertilized eggs, and it has been a blast watching them! 5 of the chicks made it, and they're now 6 weeks old. we're making more room in the coop. :-)

❤ lovely video. I'm letting a broody hatch chicks for the first time. I've been kinda nervous about it. Due to the heat, I didn't want her in the coop all day and night it's just too hot. So I brought her in the house. She hadn't been sitting on an empty nest so it was easy to introduce her to the new nest. She's in our brooder. When she is ready for some time out she goes to the end of the brooder and hops up and down. Eggs are due to hatch this weekend. Worried about moving her/chicks, to main coop.

How do you entice the geese to use the house? If you do nothing, will they soon occupy it or ignore it? Will they poo inside the house or do they do their business elsewhere? (I know nothing about geese).
@appleturnover4 ай бұрын
you know, they immediately got that it was their home. it’s not hard to herd them there. they poop a great deal inside, yes, but we keep sawdust in there so it stays nice and dry. watch ‘deep litter’ for more about how that works!

1:29 is that a bieldfelder? we have one too who just hatched chicks! I’m trying to find out how to gain the chicks trust while she’s raising them. She’s pretty tame herself but her chicks run away..
@appleturnover4 ай бұрын
yes! try feeding her seeds that she can feed her chicks, and then when you can grab them let them look in your eyes and talk to them. they’ll associate you with good things eventually.
@MistressOP5 ай бұрын
Do they need access to water when broody? Because sometimes you mist duck eggs when trying to hatch them out
@appleturnover5 ай бұрын
oh yes, i always keep water available. none of my ducks have ever hatched ducklings though, so i’m not sure of the misting.
@heatherlewis2332Ай бұрын
Misting in an incubator is meant to take the place of the natural humidity from the sitting mother 😊

Using deep litter is amazing! We use almost exclusively straw because we have almost unlimited access to it. It’s also nice because they break it down while they dig and it saves great mulch around everything in the garden

Hi! We just got our first goslings! Do you put any food/water in their house with them at night?
@appleturnover6 ай бұрын
by the time i move them out they don’t need anything at night, but if it is warm where you are and you have them move out quite early you might want to for a while. just not so much that rats start breaking in! and water can eventually rot the house. late spring is such a long day, they’ve had plenty of food all day.

How soon do you let the momma take her babies out with the flock once they hatch?
@appleturnover7 ай бұрын
i like to wait til every chick is bouncy enough to keep up and get out of the way of her super-charged digging. once she gets out she really goes foraging and it isn’t good if there’s someone too new to keep up. it’s usually just a couple of days. she might need bathroom break though…but she’ll kind of let you know.
